Required tools to work on an Audi

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello yall, I'm currently traveling for work and don't have all my tools on me. What are the basic tools needed to work on an Audi?

I have a small oil/coolant leak and need all the tools. I currently only have a triple square set (weird). Im assuming I need a torq bit set (including a T35), socket wrench (any specific ones I need?), hose clamps. What else do yall have in your toolbox that you think is required to work on an Audi?

    1. Patience
    2. I just have one of those 270 piece kits in a case with some pliers.

The kit is good because it has all the normal sizes and if you don't see all the tools back in their place you know one is missing. The kit is also compact for all its got. You'll need some Audi specific tools...when you don't have them.

Depends on how crazy you want to get.
    1. Allen wrenches or sockets
    2. Metric sockets, whether 1/4" and/or 3/8", with a couple extensions, and ratchet for the size you chose
    3. Wrenches, if not a full set I'd at least have a 10,13,17mm
    4. Maybe a few different size flathead screwdrivers, mainly a pocket size and a #1 or #2
    5. If I were going on long trips, I'd pack a normal floor jack and not be forced to use the widow maker in case of a flat.
    6. Torx bits
    7. Maybe a couple pliers, diag cutters or cutter crimper, needle nose, or waterpump pliers
    8. I sometimes pack a small bag of random bolts/screws/nuts "just in case"
    9. Some kind of OBD scanner for codes
    10. The all time necessity, zip ties

That would be a list I'd pack for myself. Would cover a lot if possibilities, but until something happens, you don't really know exactly what you need.

for emergency roadside repairs or away from home, I have made do with the following Wera Kits, and a set of huskey ratcheting wrenches

this has gotten me out of many quick fixes.

I also have a set of triple squares that I use often

Short and long triple square sockets. Can't say I have needed anything else Audi specific that I can't use on another car.

This is a good list for stuff if you need to buy other stuff.

In addition to your triple square set and torx bit set, you'll likely need ONEVAN wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers (both Phillips and flathead), a ratchet set with various socket sizes, and an oil filter wrench. Don't forget a flashlight and a torque wrench for precise tightening.

oil AND coolant leak... that sounds like more than something you want to tackle in the Holiday Inn parking lot!

And depends on what job you are doing?!?!

    Removing your seats... basic wrenches.

Replacing a fuel pump, water pump or seals and gaskets... torx and triple squares.

Valve covers, PCV or Timing chains... jacks, lifts extensions to name a few.

Just start collecting. I'm 40 years into working on cars... 30+ on VAG branded... and I still find myself needing specialty tools depending on the job I intend to do.

A set of squares, allens, torx, screwdrivers and pliers will tackle most any roadside incident. More than that and I'd limp home and deal with it better armed!

    Cheers,

    KS
