How Strict are Smog / Emissions Test in Colorado?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey everyone,

Just moved to Denver from out of state and about to go through car registration process and the whole bit. I have a 2016 audi sq5 with Awe downpipe, exhaust, APR carbinio intake and 034 tune.

Should I be worried about not passing visual inspection or any tests with my mods?? Thanks in advance!

Yes. Does your downpipe have cats? If not, you're going to fail. Flash the car back to stock, if you bring it in with the tune you're going to fail.

Maybe they treat a 20 year old car different but I was there the other day with my S4 and they barely looked at it.

Yeah I have AWE downpipes & exhaust. I just checked their site and for both products, it says they're good in 50 states. Maybe I'll give Burg Performance a ring and pick their brain. I see that they're a 034 tune shop, so they may have experience in the tune being good or not for emissions testing.

Unless the tune is CARB compliant it doesn't matter. Flash it back to stock, make sure the readiness monitors and set and then try to smog it

I depends where you are and what county you actually live in. Where I’m at on the western slope, there is no smog test requirement. When I lived in boulder, I had to get tested every couple of years. Not sure if it’s the same for the entire front range, or just certain counties. I know when I bought my Tacoma, it had an emissions test exemption sticker on the windshield. Bought it brand new and was living where i am now, so im not sure if that had to do with the sticker or not.

Berg is AMAZING, and I highly recommend them!! They have taken great care of me and my Audi's (RS5 and SQ5)

Let’s just say that for whatever reason a tune us detected and you fail due to that, does that log get sent out to the DMV automatically or do you just keep trying without the DMV figuring things out?!

You get sent to the smog referee where they're going to go thru your entire car with a fine toothed comb. It's the same process as when I had my LS swapped 944 inspected and made legal for smog here and they were quite thorough...

Just curious if they passed it with an aftermarket tune then? or did you need to flash back to stock? Debating on doing a tune but don't want it to cause lots of hassles when emissions check does eventually come around for me. I have run my G35 through emissions with a tune before and no issue.

Hi folks. I have a '16 RS7 and I passed all the OBD/smog/gas cap checks in Denver County (the strictest county) with an APR Stage 1 tune. No other mods. I'm posting this to let everyone know I DID NOT go to APR and flash back to OEM Audi tune, I simply switched the tune to "Stock" from the cruise control lever and I passed! No issues at all! Also, my RS7 was not put onto the AWD rollers, the testing folks mentioned that cars 2013 and newer do not do the roller/dyno. Your mileage may vary, but I'm very happy my tune was not detected. Kind reminder to vote against stricter emissions laws in Denver county in the future. Any questions don't hesitate to ask me. Cheers.

Thanks for the update!! I am looking at the 034 tune myself for my rs5. Good to know "flashing back to stock" would fix any issues and pass emissions.
