    S4 oil change frequency

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Trying to determine the best way to know when to have my oil changed in my 2018 S4.
The maintenance schedule suggests every 10,000 (every minor/standard maintenance) but the MMI service check interval its telling me something more frequent (seems like around 5000 miles). Which one should I follow?

The best way to know is to have the oil tested at increments (say 5k, 7.5k, 10k) and see how it's doing. If it loses viscosity, contaminated with fuel, etc...

Otherwise you could just follow factory spec assuming your car sees average duty and isn't modified. The factory fill Castrol is a very high quality oil, albeit thin, but for normal use it should be fine for 10k service. As a single point of reference, at 4k miles my oil on a stage 2 EPL modified car that ran a bunch of 1/4 mile passes in the Houston heat was still showing in-spec viscosity, flash point and low contamination. I think changing a stock car that isn't being abused at 5k would be too frequent. Run a few oil analysis, it's not very expensive, if you want to be certain.

I change mine every 5k, I plan on keeping this car for a long long time so it’s worth it to me

In the US, the interval is either one year, or 10,000 miles -- whichever comes first -- and the MMI will tell you for either situation. Are you doing less than 10K miles per year?

Im in Houston also. I follow the 10k intervals because thats what Audi says and what they cover under any warranty/CPO and what they offer in their service plans. Either way it doesnt hurt to change it sooner.

5k for mine with the OEM oil. I have (soon to be had) Audicare and they do every other oil change. Mine is bone stock and sadly not even remotely abused (crap roads and no appreciable tracks close by with hillbilly bob and his manhood size compensating redneck trucks kicking up debris- I’m on my 4th windshield- keep the S4 off the road for winter).

For the changes, I got one of the cheapo Harbor Freight sucker dealios and it works just fine (first time I’d ever done that method). It probably missed the last few ounces of oil but since I’m changing it as often as I do, meh.

I had been buying oil and filters from dealers as it really isn’t too expensive, but as I’m a bit further from a dealer now, I ordered the oil and filter from Amazon for my next change which is very soon. Again, the OEM stuff isn’t too expensive and by changing it at the intervals I do (just about 35k miles on the clock now) I figure I am keeping things fresh.

Curious if anyone know on the MMI, lets say the oil level was at the minimum mark, how much would it take to be at the full mark? A quart? Half quart?

    I believe it's a quart
I think it's probably a liter, but close enough
Doubt the Germans use quarts :)

Thanks! mine is registering maybe a 1/4 quart low after 3300 miles since my last change, ill monitor before topping it off. I am assuming poor PCV system. extra lube for the cylinders!

Even at stock levels, I change it every 5k with 0w20. I have been reading about 5w40 though which is suppose to be easier or better on rocker arms? Or at least what I'm interpreting.

For the tuned guys (Stage 2 and above) what oil are you using? I just flashed IE Stage 2, and I'm thinking of using VW 506 spec 5w30 for the RS5 for the summer. And VW 508 0w20 for the winter. I live in the NYC area with lots of stop n go driving, and I do not track the car. thanks!

I've been researching on BTIOG and other sites on doing essentially teh same thing. I like the 504 spec with higher HTHS and still requires a good additive package. I'm likely going to Mobil 1 0w-30 ESP, currently running Motul spec 508. I know others are going 5w-40, but I'm just not there yet.
