Do B8's still have timing belts?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First time post on this forum and more familiar with 2.0 B7's. Do the B8's after 2009 with a 2.0 still use timing belts? The 3.2 and 3.0 V6 are a timing chain engine correct? Considering a move to a B8 platform but wondering what inherent issues they have compared to B7's. How are the 3.0's?
How bout cam followers in the 2.0?
    Thanks

Nah the B8s use timing chains. I'd say most B8.0 have the updated tensioner though I'd still run the VIN to see if it had the recall done; B8.5s came with updated tensioner from factory. B8.0 and B8.5 have chains that stretch every 100k to 120k miles and need to be replaced. Not many talk about the balance shaft chains but a YouTuber NaptownTuner did show the balance shaft chains do stretch, just not at as drastic of a rate but still best to replace them while you're in there.

The C7.0 3.0T (supercharged but whatever Audi) have cold start chain slap because it looses oil pressure while sitting. Nothing too major but if the slap lasts for more than (I think) 2 seconds then you need to replace tensioners. Have fun with that because the chain setup is on the REAR of the engine so its an engine out job. While you're in there you might as well do the chains and the whole shebang. C7.5 3.0Ts (or C7.0 that already had the tensioners replaced) don't have chain slap because the updated the tensioner.

From what I hear, 3.0T is much more reliable and doesn't burn NEARLY as much oil as the 2.0T do (though it is still common just not like 1 qt/400 miles like the 2.0T) but when things do go wrong it's more expensive since its an Audi exclusive engine that has 2 more cylinders.

As much as I love my allroad, I keep debating whether to get a C7.0 A6 with the 3.0T or saving some more dough to get a C7.5.

B7 and before used EA113 4-cyl engines. B8 and after use EA888 4-cyl engines. More than a few differences between them, including the change from timing belt to timing chain and the change from a sliding tappet to a rolling tappet. There's plenty to find out there about the common issues of the "FSI" and "TSI" engines (btw, neither of those terms are correct, but they are what you'll find web pages using, incorrect or not).

3.0T is an S model thing in the US, unless you want to look at B8.5 Q5. Has its issues too, and oil consumption was one early on till they made PCV changes. SAI carbon clogging is an issue. Doing chains is a suck job that requires removing the engine and transmission (workshop manual process is for the 3.0T and trans to be dropped as a unit, then separated).

There were revisions to the b8/b8.5 timing chain designs. Apparently the original version installed in both b8 and b8.5s were more prone to stretch than the updated version. Easy to tell by taking off the top timing cover and also check the timing chain tensioner version.

Chain is better than belt. We have a set way to monitor and plan for chain replacement. Belt you just have to do because it'll just snap out of the blue one day. That no one understood chain state monitoring when the EA888 came out is not the technology's problem. That Audi used a poor design for the original tensioner has nothing to do with using a chain vs belt.

Timing belts are way easier for a DIYer than a chain, but, belts don't last near as long. My 2013 timing chain lasted to 280,000 kms with adaptation @ 5.5 or something when it got done. (car had the revised tensioner)
