Hello I’m looking and I can’t seem to find any information as to the type of battery I have, and my battery is low and with the car sitting with suspension components upgrades I’d like to get my trickle charger on it but not sure if I should engage the “normal” or “AGM” mode for the charger? I have what I think is the original battery it’s a Varta 8K0 915 105 F but I can’t find anything as to if it’s a conventional battery or an AGM and if there is a difference in the charging mode when on the 2amp setting ? Looking for anyone that would know if that part number (which seems to be an Audi part number) indicates AGM or not thanks

If it's the OEM battery, then it's AGM. But for charging, you'll be fine either way. AGM batteries like a bit more charging current, but they'll still charge in either setting.

VAG part number 8K0 915 105 F is original spec for PR-J0Z (conventional flooded H9); this was in our '14 A4Q, too. See my VAG starter batteries guide here: https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/spe...codes.9490580/ --g

I went with the everstart platinum agm from walmart. Battery is made in Germany and other than the color/labels, it was exactly the same as the varta it replaced, for much less coin.

As noted, 8K0...F is H9 wet flood, not an AGM.

Really? That's news to me. My 2011 and my 2016 both came with AGM from the factory.

Just curious...how can you tell by looking at a battery if it's AGM or flooded? My AGM looks exactly the same as a flooded battery. The only AGM batteries that look different are spiral AGM like an Optima, for example. Non-spiral AGM don't look any different than a standard flooded battery.

AGM letters = AGM; EFB letters = EFB; no letters = wet flood.
black case = maybe AGM, maybe EFB; translucent/gray case = probably wet flood.
no sight glass = maybe anything; sight glass = wet flood.

If there's no identification on the battery which you can look up, there's pretty much no way to authoritatively confirm the chemistry inside.

    Non-AGM in a black case - https://www.ebay.com/itm/191704012395
Image of a wet flood sight glass - https://www.ebay.com/itm/165053835616
Moll slaps a sticker over the sight glass, Varta does not - https://www.drive2.ru/l/548435851252597845/
a proper wet flood, translucent case, sight glass - https://www.interstatebatteries.com/products/mtp-95r/h9

So the correct answer? If it says AGM on it, it's AGM. Otherwise, look up the battery identification on the manufacture web site.

Thanks for sharing this image, bb-tt. Looks like PR-J0B. Battery manufactured by Johnson Controls. Note the production date coded on the (-) terminal. --g

Yeah....I always had the idea that an AGM is the better choice for any battery that's mounted inside the car, even if it's in the trunk. My Jeep has the battery mounted under the front passenger seat and it too is an AGM. Actually, it has two AGM batteries under the front seat. It's a strange set up for sure.

The wagons definitely seemed to get AGM more than the sedans. Like bb-tt, my 09 avant came with 4F0...E H8 AGM (J0B). While I remember several had posted their 3.2L 09 sedans coming with H9 flood (J0Z). I don't know any spec that loaded out with H9 AGM (J0P), other than it is defined. I suspect the electric tailgate is what pushed avants to AGM.

I brought up this interesting topic because I have this exact physical battery in my 2013 B8 petro not flex fuel (I have plastic intake) CAEB 2.0Tfsi and the only difference I see on this battery is that mine is 8K0 915 105 F and this battery in image clearly shows AGM. I went to Varta website couldn’t find any reference from the part number with the physical construction of the battery.. I’m not here to say flooded over glass mat I really don’t have any preference as long as my battery is charging correctly and is coded properly. However for discussions and forums to say there is a physical difference between AGM and flooded acid batteries is incorrect as we are seeing the batteries look identical

One says 4F0 915 105 E, one says 8K0 915 105 F. One is H8 size, one is H9 size. One has a black casing, one has a translucent casing. One says AGM, one does not. They are not identical.

I have a Q5 but the 3D0 915 105 H that I replaced 2+ years ago clearly says "AGM" on the top label (right above the BEM code).
