Summer tire recommendations for 20” wheels

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone, for those running OEM 20” wheels, what are some summer tire recommendations?

I’d love something that’s fairly quiet and good wet traction for Seattle weather.

    Thanks in advance!

Michelin PS4S. You can get them in either the stock size (255/30) or you can go a bit wider at 265/30.

Considered by many to be the best summer tire on market since its intro. I’ve had them on everything from my old S4, TTS and now TTRS. They perform well in the wet and are reasonably quiet for a low profile summer tire. Ride better than the stock Pirelli P zero(assuming you are coming from the P zero) as well. The only thing you give up going P zero to PS4S is some steering response. I even have the SUV version (PS4 SUV) on my Porsche Macan and it transformed that car!

Countless reviews online singing its praise. Another plus too is for a summer tire it actually does reasonably well as temps dip close to the typical no go zone for summer compounds.

Thanks for a thorough response! Can’t wait to try them this summer.

Solid tire, but not available in the TTRS size/fitment yet (US), though I am sure it will be eventually as the roll out progresses.

I've had the contisport contact 6 (its predecessor) before on Audis, def competitive to the PS4S; but nowhere near the treadwear of the Michelin so expect a short life on the car. I ran through sets (no tracktime) in 15/18k miles, vs solid 30k for the Michelin. Continental clearly compromises on wear for overall dry traction; thus softer compound. Michelin does a very good job with wear on all their recent releases compared to the competition. Contisports have never been known to last long, so just be aware if treadlife is important to you.

Hopefully we do get it in all sizes. Really the new ExtremeContact Sport 02 is the tire targeted and designed for the US market, so hopefully that doesn't keep continental from releasing the full size catalog over here in the US for the sportcontact 7. Audi has had plenty of OE fitments on the predecessor sportcontact 6, so I am sure the sportcontact 7 will follow suit on future S and RS models.

Seems like we have been slow to get new release tires over here, the PS 5 (replacement for the PS4 not the PS4S) has barely made it over to the states since being released over a year ago.

Fun fact: BMW actually uses the ExtremeContact Sport 02's for the BMW M-driving school M-cars vs the OE Star-Spec PS4S's for what its worth. These are their cars that you can beat on at 100+MPH around a road course.

The P-Zero's (non RO1-spec) actually score pretty evenly with PS4S (non star-spec) according to tire-rack.

I enjoy the OE RO1-spec P-zero's. It does everything I need it to, but they are pricey.

I had the R01 as OEM tires on both TTS and RS, I think that on dry they are good, but their performance level decreases rapidly with wear; also, they become pretty noisy

Assuming you are referring to the P Zero (RO1)? I had them on both our TTS and TTRS and didn't keep them on that long at all. Also had them in a previous A6 TDI (2014). That tire has been around a long time, since been replaced by the PZ4. And you are right, they get noisy quickly! In there day though they were OEM fitment on a lot of high end cars and super cars (lambo, etc), so clearly a very good tire.

The only thing they had on the Michelin PS4S is steering response, there was a noticeable drop in steering response on both me TTS and TTRS when I went from the stock P Zero (RO1) to the PS4S. More pronounced on the TTRS, where the P Zero felt like a go cart. In return, compliance and ride quality went up though as expected with a softer sidewall.

I have heard the new PZ4 is actually quieter than the PS4S, though it may only apply to the first few thousand miles . . . .

Yeah the PZ4 Sport versions trail just slightly behind the PS4S in dry, but out perform them in the wet in Tirerack tests. I run the PS4S on the TTRS and do find them a bit floaty and numb in the wet. For that reason I grabbed the PZ4 Sport version of the P Zero for the Golf R for my track tires last year, stuck like glue and sure enough had several track days in the rain and they were solid finding grip all over the place.

I will say they do not last long, granted I used them for track duty but they wore down quick. Still plan to get another set to use just for wet track days and street driving though, got a set of 888Rs for dry events this year.

Strongly recommend 18" wheels, but if you have to be on 20s then PS4S is the way to go.

I personally went for Pilot Sport All Season 4 since they last so much longer, are 30% cheaper, and performance is 95% there, still able to get an 11.5s 1/4 mile with them (stock). Overall better than the Pzero the car came with, even if they are technically all seasons.
