CH340 Vag KKL cable & VAG EEPROM / VCDS Lite - HELP

anyone have one of those cheap ebay cables working? I have one with the ch340 chip that i’ve had for years. I used to use it for VCDS lite before I got a hex can. I used it to pull immo3 SKC’s to do my cluster swap.

Now it doesn’t work. I’ve tried 4 different laptops. I’ve tried VM’s. I’ve tried windows 10, 10 32bit, 7 32 bit, and XP 32 bit. I’ve tried every driver. Nothing will work for me and I have no idea what I did years ago to make it work. I’m trying to swap my old cluster back in but I need to update the mileage. VCDS: “port ok, interface not found” of course. yes the correct port is selected.

I ordered another Ch340 chip cable hoping my cable was just bad. no luck. I have an FTDI chip cable coming, since those seem to work better for most people.

Does anyone out there have any tricks for getting one of these cables working? Unless someone knows how to make a hex can work with vageeprom.

Wasn't there an update to VCDS that made it impossible to use eBay cables to do anything in their software? I think you had the ability to check a box to allow you to use a generic cable, back in the day, but now that button is gone. All I know is that I am forced to use my HEX-something cable that I bought from Ross-Tech if I want to use VCDS. Did you update VDCS?

I've only ever used the FTDI cables. Always worked well. You do want to go into the COM Port settings and change the latency from default of 16ms down to 1ms. Some modules will fail to connect if you don't do this.

Ebay VAG "KKL" cable will work with VCDS-Lite which is basically the last version of VCDS before they switched to smart cables. Also known as version "409.1", which many of the ebay cables are labeled as.

I guess i’ll just have to wait til my FTDI cable comes. Tbh the CH340 was always very hit or miss. would work some days, wouldn’t others.

I’ve also messed with latency. It actually usually defaults to 2ms. I do change it to 1, still no help.

What’s weird is I’ve had the opposite experience with Arduinos, which is what these cables are based on btw. The knockoff CH340 arduino nano chips (the $2 ones from ali) have never given me issues. But I occasionally have problems with drivers and connecting to the com port with the genuine Arduino FTDI nano chips.
