shifter issue? will not go into 2nd gear.

What are your guy's thoughts? I think I need to buy a new shifter. So from inside the car, I could not get the car to go into first or second gear. I dropped the car off at the dealer because we know one of the mechanics there. He looked at it and got the car to go into every gear from under the car by like manually putting the car in gear by hand from the linkage I believe. He was able to get the car to go into every gear from inside the car except second gear and said the shifter felt loose/ sloppy. I'm thinking I just need a whole new shifter, and I am thinking about just replacing it with a new short-throw shifter. Will a new shifter fix the issue?

    I have the 01e transmission, 2002 Audi a4 3.0 Quattro 6-Speed manual.

Would help if we knew what transmission you have. There are several different manual transmissions for the B6 chassis. Start with year, engine, and how many gears do you have?

Be aware that the 01e is known for bad 1-2 shift collars and worn brass synchros. You can try adjusting the linkage at the shifter linkage (JHM has guides to align on YouTube) and try bleeding the clutch system or getting stiffer bushings but it's most likely gonna be the shift collar. New OEM spec fluid might help too if that hasn't been done in a long time or if you used another brand fluid. 01e are picky with fluids.

So you don't think a new shifter will work? If the synchros are bad, how could he put the car in gear by hand and then from underneath the car?

I have a video but I need help uploading it, it says it's too long, and I can't upload photos. Before I dropped it off, I was locked out of first and second, but he could get it into first gear but not second gear. That's why I'm leaning toward a shifter. I also remember one time I had the interior torn apart, and when I looked at the shifter, it seemed like it was partly made of plastic, so maybe something broke?

01E in the s4 is known for it as they didn't have the updated shift collars in them. That car should be updated shift collars and synchros. Unless its been shifted by a 2 year old without a clutch my money is on the fact it out of alignment or needs the bushes replaced on the linkage. Note there is an alignment procedure to align the shifter. Also note any worn bushes and mount for the engine or trans can cause stuff to come out of alignment.

If you can't see anything broken or if the bushings look fine then try adjusting the linkage. It can make a world of difference. I've been locked out of reverse because of bad linkage alignment.

Late B5 S4 and early 3.0 B6 have the same transmission and linkage. Same problems too...

I am trying to remember. Is there a way to tell visually? I already have a new shift linkage bushing from JHM. I will try and just visually inspect it, see if I can see anything wrong, and probably order a new shifter.

I can see why some people say the synchros may be bad, but if they are bad, how come he was able to put the car in gear manually? I'm no expert, but to me, that doesn't make sense.

How I adjusted mine. Unfortunately my 1-2 shift collar is damaged and gear changes are rough/notchy AF no matter how I adjusted it.

Would you happen to know the size of the adjustment bolt?

All good. I watched this video from jhm, "6-Speed Solid Shifter Adjustment Tips and Tricks" he said if it's barely out of adjustment, you'll be locked out of reverse, first, and second. Hopefully it just came out of line.

I'm well aware B5 S4's and 2002-2003 b6 a4 3.0 vehicles with manual transmissions used 01E transmissions. My point being, out of the 9 transmissions I had apart from B6 vehicles almost all had updated synchros and shift collars in comparison to the s4 transmissions.
