    Possible overheating

Hey folk, I noticed earlier that the fans seem to be going full whack on my rs5. The oil temperature is taking an absolute age to heat up but the water temperature gauge which usually sits at 90 was sitting 1 notch above. I checked the oil levels and it seems 1/4 down which is odd as it had an oil change in September and was full.

I checked the oil cap and nothing sludgy but not really sure what else I can check. Any hints? Probably won't be able to get it into the audi garage until after New Year given the time of year. I can get away with not driving it which I think is probably for the best for now.

What is the temperature you are getting on city driving vs highway driving?

I do find the RS5 runs hotter compared to other cars like M and AMG for some reason!!

During the summer I freak out when the temperature goes up pretty high.

Oil temps around 90degC to 100degC. Water temp should always be around 90degC, no?

That's interesting, mine has always say sat at the 90degC marker on the coolant temp. Seems odd that the coolant temp is now at 100degC and the oil temperature is still at 60degC after 30min driving.

Also given it sounds like a jet engine a few minutes after being turned on masked me think it's not behaving quite right :P

My Coolant temp is always around 91-93 and oil is around 98 winter or 101-106 in the summer time.

Coolant temp over 100 seems too high and oil temperature 60 is way too low if that is after 10mins of driving.

Yes, that sounds more like what it usually is.

I've been playing around a little more and plugged my device into OBD II port. I could see that there were a few alerts to do with temperature sensors - which after screenshotting and documenting the error codes, I reset. The fans immediately stopped sounding like a jet engine taking off and returned to normal engine sound. The coolant temperature gauge on a considerable drive (120miles) never went past 90degC, however the oil temp also never went past 70degC. Outside temp is 7.5degC but it's very unusual for me to see this car running like this.

Engine oil running such low temperature maybe not be good for the engine. I am not a mechanic but engine oil should be running hotter than that. You should get Audi to check it out for you if it's still under warranty.

I was thinking of taking it to audi to be honest but it's not under warranty. Maybe just a dodgy temperature sensor? No new error codes found though so I'm a tad confused.

Bad thermostat and/or wrong one of cooling pump.

Check coolant level, if there is loss of coolant, there is air intercooler leak.

This sounds very similar to an issue I had. It almost sounded like a jet engine under the hood from the fan running. My thermostat was replaced under TSB 2058767/5 and that fixed it.

No coolant loss, all is good on that front. No warning lights have come on with the dashboard but definitely a bit weird. Hopefully audi will be capable of diagnosing the problem.

What's the reason for the oil temp not being high enough? Since I reset the error codes, the fans have gone back to normal (literally turned off as soon as I reset) so what could be keeping the oil from not getting to 90degC?

Mine had no warning lights and coolant was just barely low. I don't know but think perhaps the immediate and constant flow of coolant was keeping the oil cooler than normal.

If it comes up again ask them to check the TSB I listed.

For Europe there is an TPI with same problem/text, I don't have number.

    See the screenshot:

When these were active, the fans were running full blast. I reset the codes and the fans immediately shut off. Everything seemed normal except for the oil not reaching operating temperature.

Exactly what TSB/TPI says, so the thermostat is out of order.

Hey folk, so have had it fixed (thermostat was busted)! Temperatures seem back in normal range again.

Slight concern though - I'm seeing error code P04A000 now on my scanner which, as you can see above, wasn't there previously. I've googled the error and I'm not really sure what it means exactly for this car. Could this be something that was either damaged or not plugged back in correctly?

I have reset the error code this morning to see if it's a persistent problem. It didn't come back for the rest of my drive to work. I got back in the car this evening to drive home and saw the error code again. The only thing I can think is that it's been freezing cold all day and below freezing and if there is any external valve, it could be frozen? Doesn't sound that plausible though, given it has been cold previously and I've not seen this.
