    Wheel hub bearing replacement

My TT quattro coasts down the hill (DSG in neutral) rumbling like a tank. It has 170k mile. Has anyone done wheel hub bearing replacement and made a difference?

Just be sure it's a wheel bearing and not something else. I changed ours on mk1, being sure this was the source of a rumble when it turned out to be the center carrier bearing for the drive shaft. Replacing the (front) bearing was pretty easy and I rented the tools

Yes don't chase gremlins..Lift the car up and inspect the wheel. Grab at 10-4 and give it a good shake. Also check your lugs make sure they are all tight.

@jasontwo Which bearing do you refer to as "center carrier bearing" for the drive shaft?

Yup, bit finicky to replace but now very smooth.

Okay, I see the confusion now. Audi manual and catalog call shafts that connect to wheels/hubs "drive shaft", 2x for fwd and 4x for quattro. The shaft jasontwo mentioned is called propshaft, propeller shaft or cardan shaft (first time I saw this name minutes ago on 7zap). Here is the part catalog for mk1 and the part in question is number 17 call "intermediate bearing" (1H0521349):

    https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+tt.../5/521-521010/

For mk2, there is no part number for the intermediate bearing, and, unlike the mk1, the bearing is one-legged:

    https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+tt.../5/521-521000/

That brings up the question for the JXB upgrade A4Maine-iac posted, which shows 2 mount points on either side like the mk1 bearing. Do I need to a drill hole on the mk2 body to mount the JXB bearing?

Its a direct swap. I just purchased one last week after the failure of my front flex disc.

Got under the car and have all the facts. My base model 2.0T quattro intermediate bearing bracket also has mounting holes on both sides. Turns out the ETKA/7zap catalogs have a missing illustration of the twin bolts. The ElsaWin manual clearly shows 2 bolts (number 6):

I also emailed JXB, and the reply was:

... This install video was done on the underside of a Mk2 TTRS. No modifications needed.

    https://youtu.be/UZXLTACuPTc
Although the base 2.0 TT models exhaust mid-section is different from the 2.5T inline 5 or 3.2 VR6. Unlike the twin pipe in the video, there is a mid-silencer and a by-pass in the 2.0 TT. You have to remove the entire mid-exhaust between the cat and the rear silencer to install the JXB upgrade:

    https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+tt.../2/253-253065/

I moved the heat shield towards to back to inspect the intermediate bearing. All 4 spokes are intact and in good enough shape, so it's not the likely cause of the rumble while coasting at neutral.

I didn't have too much trouble doing the replacement on mine. It's nice that they come as a bolt-in assembly so you don't need to press them in or anything. I did have to unbolt the lower ball joint to get enough movement in the suspension to be able to get the axle out of the way. Once that was done I had no problem accessing the bolts for the wheel bearing assembly. The body was rusted into the spindle so it did take some good whacks with BFH to break it free.

@hamfisted Lucky you, able to unbolt the 4 12-point in place. I knew I will have trouble doing that, because it was an east cost car, so I took the whole struct/coil spring out with the wheel hub. I still was not able to unbolt them and ended up cutting into the old bearing to reduce their grip. I will do the rear bearing in place, now that I know how to cut them.
