Driver door lost power after replacing the door speaker

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi
I replaced the Driver side (Right hand drive) door speaker with OEM Speaker and when I put the door trim back on the drive side door had no power whatsoever, I ran the OBD11 output test on driver side windows and mirror and both worked apart from door lock and door lights, however, for some reason OBD11 automatically popped up the option to update the gateway which I pressed ok. since than I can not access door control unit, if I add the control unit manually and try to access it has error message "Control unit do not respond. Check the ignition and try again." I checked all the fuses, tested the loom with multimeter and also a visual check does not show any brake in the door harness. I tried a different control unit without any success, I disconnected the battery black cable over night but nothing works apart from the door speaker, after disconnecting the door loom I have a message "gearbox malfunction Audi you can drive in manual mode" now the gear lever is stuck in Park mode. Any help will be most appreciated.

Below is the recent log from OBD11:

    The faultcodes say
-No signal to driver sides door control module
-Right front bass speaker Open circuit intermittent

That bottom one is the speaker you replaced right?
I really dont like OBD fault codes, they are often wrong and when one thing fails it brings a lot of random codes that arent really broken with it...

    I'd try backtracing your steps.
It worked, you changed something, it doesnt work now.

Did you make any changes to the wiring? If yes> what did you change, got pictures?
If you didn't, did you just unplug the old speaker and plug the new one in? If yes> try reconnecting old speaker and see if it still works (after resetting obd faults)
    Maybe faulty speaker?

Unplug the speaker, see if you get your door control module back. Also, did you do this work with the battery connected or did you power everything down first? If you did the former, you may have fried your door control module.

Thanks for the reply, I agree with OBD11 irrelevant fault codes, I did replace the bottom speaker with a new and it worked well the scan I provided is when i took off the speaker. I also reinstalled the old speaker and clear the codes but 5 faulty codes comes back which are static including No signal to driver sides door control module. No changes made to the wiring, it was straight forward to unplug the door and connect back as is.

Thanks for the reply I did unplug the new speaker and plugged back the old one with no success, I also purchased exactly the same second hand door control unit and had the same results. No I did not disconnect the battery when I replaced the speaker or when took the door trim off, is there anyway to test the door control unit? cheers

The story is a bit vague, if you really want us to help you should describe accurately the current state, exactly what steps you took etc.
But just a wild internet guess is that you fried it by not disconnecting the battery

Please read the thread from the beginning I can not be more explanatory, why would you think the speaker can cause malfunction?

I did read it from the beginning. Since you aren't a qualified technician (or else you wouldn't post here but figure it out yourself, nor would you forget to disconnect the battery when working on electrics) there could be a step in your process where you screwed up. That's what im trying to help you with.
Like the other guy said, probably not disconnecting the battery lead to frying the door control module.

But because you can not be more explanatory i'll change my advice: Take it to a shop and pay them for a diagnose.
    Good luck!

I'm just spitballing here since I can't be there to diagnose firsthand: based on the codes I would guess 1 of 4 things: broken wire(s) leading to the door control module, a bad door control module, or a speaker that is causing a short, or you've damaged some other unrelated module by connecting/disconnecting things while powered.

Just as an example, I had a friend at work trying to fix his lock cylinder on his Tiguan. He ended up frying his power steering rack module and his steering lock module because he was plugging/unplugging all the connections under his wheel a bunch of times with the battery connected. These modules really don't like it when you do that. They don't seem to be built to handle that kind of abuse. I was able to repair his steering wheel module with him but the rack had to be totally replaced.

Thanks for the reply, let's assume that the door control unit has been fried, but it has been replaced with another one with no success while was battery disconnected, initially the door internal plug was disconnected while the ignition was off. Furthermore, the left hand door works as normal and the car has no problem starting, gear lever can be released manually and car moves, fuel door can be locked unlocked so is the boot, all the other functionality in working order such as lights, blinkers, air conditioning, MMI etc. Also, please correct me if I am wrong but the door module does not power central locking or the speakers. Therefore old and new speaker works fine but strangely the central locking does not work on driver door. It makes me wonder if the Window motor module has an issue and it completes the circuit for door control module.

Please see the log below prior to replacing the speaker, since then the car has not been driven and everything seems to be fine.

Like the other guy said, probably not disconnecting the battery lead to frying the door control module.

But because you can not be more explanatory i'll change my advice: Take it to a shop and pay them for a diagnose.
    Good luck!

For anyone else reading this post, J386 door control module is not an egg that you can fry it by disconnecting a 30 pin cable or else it would have shown in scan log as faulty, and the door speaker has nothing to do with the door control unit, the J386 and J389 module which are related to in the diagram. Upon individual circuit testing there is no electricity flow in pin 19 and there is no break in pin 19 and 20 from door harness. Fuse 9 in column C of in the right rear which supply the 12v to J386 is intact. I will post the further testing anyone who has the similar issue.

    - I had a whole text here prepared which you certainly wouldn't appreciate. but lets be nice since its the holiday season, and i have nothing better to do-

The electrical drawings i use kind of confused me at first, but i think i might have something, after 2009 they might have changed the fuse locations.
Fuse 9 in the right of the luggage compartiment was "Passenger door ctrl module" Before 2009, but after 2009 its "AWD ctrl module 35a" (on my drawings for 2012 A5's)

On my drawings the fuse(s) for J386 (after 2009) "Door ctrl module" are 2 separate fuses on the right of the steering column, a panel on the right side of the dashboard (right hand drive i assume)
When you open that panel theres 3 vertical rows. The following are for the center row:

    8 - Fuse 8 on fuse holder C -SC8- 30 A - Driver door control unit -J386
    11 - Fuse 11 on fuse holder C -SC11- 15 A - Driver door control unit -J386-

Edit: The drawings for the door ctrl module actually confirm this, the 12v on pin 19 comes from "ST2 SC8" Which is referring to the fuse 8 mentioned above on the right of dashboard

    If that doesnt work:
When you say "there is no electricity flow in pin 19 (flow is Amperes)", do you mean there is no 12V on it?
Did you use a ground on the chassis, or did you use the brown cable as a ground?

You definitely sound like you're making good diagnostic steps, but I have to just say that disconnecting your battery before dicking around is the right decision. So no, for anyone reading this, you can very easily fry modules. It probably didn't happen to you, but it can happen, and best practice should be to do any wiring unpowered. Obviously during diagnostics that isn't possible, so it should be done with great care. All you have to do is short one of those 12V lines to ground and you'll be buying a new module. Which is a shame because all that probably failed is a single $0.10 diode.

The current state of events is basically post #11 right? I had a little trouble understanding your post after that.

Basically the fuses he checked were incorrect according to the schematics i have, the fuses for door control are in the dashboard side panel, not in the rear.
Wonder if he fixed it, since he didnt respond here or the other forum he posted the question.

OP is a RHD vehicle. So driver door is right side. Right side door control module fuses are in the right rear. Left side door control module fuses are in the left dash.

I re-checked, but it really still says its in the dashboard side fuse holder… even on RHD models, (even shows a picture of RHD model location).
The drawing of the door control module itself also indicates that the power is coming from this dashboard fuse box..

I’m assuming the 2012 cabrio model has the same schematics as the 2012 coupe except for the detachable roof?

    From the A5 wiring diagrams:

J386 T20f/19 (driver's, so front right in this case, door) is connected to T27a/19 (the front door to body junction, driver side).
For "*3 Only left-hand drive models", T27a/19 is then connected to panel C column 2 fuse 8.
For "*4 Only right-hand drive models", T27a/19 is then connected to panel F column 3 ("C") fuse 9.

J387 T20g/19 (passenger's, so front left in this case, door) is connected to T27c/19 (the front door to body junction, passenger side).
For "*3 Only left-hand drive models", T27c/19 is then connected to panel F column 3 ("C") fuse 9.
For "*4 Only right-hand drive models", T27c/19 is then connected to panel C column 2 fuse 8.

    But that's for B8.0. The OP, though a 2012, is a B8.5, as it has a J500.

Panel C is on the driver's end of the dash. It seems odd to run the left side door power across the dash to the right end, but that's how it plays out. The left side doors run off panel C on the driver's end of the dash. And the right side doors run off panel F in the right rear.

Not sure what materials you are referencing.

Interesting, im not sure i follow you, but seems like we have different schematics for the same car, or we are reading them wrong.
There is indeed a change in B8 to B8.5, in B8 its in the rear on my drawings, B8.5 front side panel.

However, the best way to find out which schematics are right, would be to have OP check it out.
Seems like he fixed it somehow since he isnt responding anymore. Or maybe he scrapped the car

So for the B8 sedan, wagon, coupe, and sportback, I can confirm the wiring as I have the wiring diagrams as Audi put out on erwin. I do not have any cabriolet documents, no one has posted any that I've found, and I'm not paying to go back into erwin for docs for a car I don't own. Obviously, the coupe does not have the rear control modules. The cabriolet does, as it has rear windows that have to go up/down; that's the only reason they are there in a cabriolet.

As the B8.0 wiring is different, and convoluted with the running change, and the OP is B8.5, let's just draw that out for our purpose.

    B8.5 wiring document raw info:

B8.5 wiring diagrams, simplified to separate LHD and RHD layouts:

The main wiring harness for the inner door panel can be be locked by the blue lever and not be all the way in. Happened to me twice. Remove and reinstall connector and test while panel is off door.
