Some cool new features for the RNS-E

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm not sure how many of you are still using an RNS-E but personally, I prefer it to the latest and greatest Android HU's, simply because it's OEM and looks just right.

I came across a site that offers custom firmware for RNS-E's (both the 1st gen (model192) offered in the B7's, as well as the newer model (193) offered on MK2 TT's). https://rnse.pcbbc.co.uk/index.php

I have the model 192 which doesn't support SDHC cards......until now.

I had installed, and been running the North America v0310 last year without any issue. I happened to check the site again recently and saw an announcement for Beta V4 (v0340) with some features I really wanted:

-The ability to use SDHC cards
-The ability to have the nav map run off an SDHC card instead of a DVD disc
-Have scrolling MP3 names in the DIS

There are many other features as well like album art, custom splash screens, show digiatl speedo on DIS, etc

The features I wanted are are available by paying for the feature pack. I really wanted the ability to have the NAV MAP on the SDHC card because sometimes my NAV drive gives a disc read error and I believe it may need a new laser pickup unit.

In anycase, I downloaded the firmware and burnt it onto a CD. Inserted it into the RNS-E which updated itself without issue.

I then paid for the feature pack via PayPal and within seconds received an email with the license key and serial number for the NavPoint software which is what you use to copy your NAV Map disk onto an SD card.

I created the NavMap disc onto one 16Gb SD card, and copied the license key along with some mp3 files onto a 32Gb SD card.

The RNS-E had no issue reading both SDHC cards and was reading the NAV map from the SDHC!!!!

I went into the engineering menu of the RNS-E and enabled mp3 scrolling names, show map on cold boot, lowercase DIS units, and digital speedo.

For those looking to add some new features to their RNS-E, I highly recommend giving this a try. I exchanged some emails with Stuart throughout this process and he was extremely helpful and patient answering all my questions.

    Here are some screen shots:

I updated my rns-e a few months ago to this firmware. I Can’t wait to put it back in my b5 and put it to good use.

I'm using this FW since last year. I love the feature about memorizing the shuffle function turned on. Also I'm working on making use of the OPS display since I have a 193 RNS-E in my B6.

So many better choices out there other than the stock RNSE. These days your better off with a aftermarket deck with a ton of features.

I for one hate aftermarket head units and android ones often have problems. Not a fan anyway. Rns-e looks just right in the B6.

So you think ipad looks good in the interior? It will look like a cheap tesla and tesla interiors are awful. Anyway, to each their own. Lets put that to rest.

In that case, try this before your laser quits for good.

I forgot about the memorizing shuffle :)

That's awesome. I regularly check my local junkyards waiting for a 193 to show up. That's how I got my 192. I'll probably never see a 193 though :)

Awesome! Does it fix the stupid volume preset whenever your first start up the unit? After years of having the radio installed I still get annoyed with it.

So this is the way the RNS-E is supposed to be? I was in a B7 with it OEM and it never behaved like that. I would set it at a low volume and I would come back to it at a low volume after a night. I left it at higher volume and it came back at a higher volume the day after. The one I installed into a B6 using a quadlock adapter works like you are describing where if I leave it at a low volume and turn it back on after a few seconds, the volume is low. If I leave it over night, it turns on really loud. Is there maybe a power wire not hooked up to the right wire to keep the setting for volume? It seems like it’s timing out or something.

In terms of features, options, touch, feel and response and latency ipad mini is a great option in my opinion. Definitely better than a older RNSE Unit then again everyone likes something different. To each its own. I sold my RNSE unit some time ago as I was just over it in terms of features there wasnt much.

This is great! For anyone new to the RNS-E game, don't forget about the AUX harness (perfect for a hidden bluetooth adapter). ;)

I am a bit curious if OP actually got the sd maps to work on a 192... the website says that feature is 193 only.

Nothing beats my bluetooth cassette tape adapter!

This is cool though, making me look forward to one day swapping out to an RNSE even more!

I had no idea of their existence until I was getting ready to settle for the ol' FM adapter (which in my experience are always crap). I remember the old school cassette adapters with the cord and everything. I'm just glad Audi kept the tape player as long as they did because the bluetooth cassette adapter is friggin' great!

So I just installed the paid feature pack upgrade with SD Card maps on my 192 unit, updated the options in the menu as per the original poster, however, I'm not seeing the directions or digital speedo in my DIS, any suggestions on what I'm missing?
For what it's worth, the maps are indeed loading without issue from the SD card, I'm just not noticing any other changes, besides the options in the menu, but not real functional differences (yet).

You need to enable through the menu of the NAV itself: NAV > Setup, scroll down to page 2, Compass => enable
