    75k mile spark plug change

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I decided to replace my spark plugs myself (for the second time) at the specified interval of 75k miles.

I found out they only replaced 4 at the 35k mile service covered by Audi. Great...

I do see why, but still it is annoying to think I drove for 40k miles more with two different types of plugs since the OE Beru plugs were superseded long ago with the RS7 NGK plugs.
It is almost like the tech at the 35k mile service said..."the driver's said is a bit$h to replace" and just skipped it.

I concur, it is a huge pain to replace the driver's side spark plugs and I honestly will not do it again, but alas at least it is done now and I have all new matching plugs. LoL

I also found one of the 35k replacements on the passenger's side was loose....again, thanks Audi "master tech".

Amazingly all the plugs looked very good. No fouling, wetness or issues of any note at all.

So far I can tell the slight hitch I used to feel slowing to a yield and then accelerating feels better. Also off-idle acceleration feels more immediate than I had gotten used to for years.
I have not had enough time to see if gas mileage is any better, plus I have a different driving pattern now anyway.

What I think is interesting is the car throws no codes for mismatched plugs/ slight possible timing difference or a loose plug. It just kept on trucking. Pretty resilient.

I also found one of the hoses to the secondary air system was disconnected/loose from prior repairs. But I had the dealer fix that when they replaced the thermostat in my other thread.

    So that's it for now...

You are handling this news like a champ! Maybe you only paid for 4 new plugs at 35k?? haha

I'd be marching my a$$ down to the dealership with receipt in-hand to have a chat. Not so much about the money at this point, it's about principle!

So what plugs did you choose? Did you change ignition coils or keep the originals?

Agreed, but unfortunately it was over 4 years ago and the other side of the country and it was under AudiCare at that time so there was no extra charge. (Got what I paid for I guess...)

    Just stock plugs.

Coils stayed stock. I don't see any need to upgrade those especially since I am no longer tuned.

Not changing them sure sucks. The 4 that were changed….. yeah i have had issues with plugs I have changed on other cars to find them loose if they were just short of being torqued properly. Seems normal for plugs to loosen on some engines.

Highjacking, so my apologies, but since this is a spark plug thread....

My 2016 RS7 had spark plugs done at 22k, and I'm at 47k miles and due for annual maintenance. When I was in for the oil strainers, SA said it was time for the 75k major service (skipping 55k and 65k) and that it was going to be $1500.

This price is preposterous (right?), but I think I am going to have it done a bit early.

What would be a reasonable cost at an Indy shop? like $700? If I can find one. The one I tried to use seems to be afraid to touch the car.

The stealership I had the recall done wanted $900 just to change spark plugs. These labor fees are ridiculous. I'll just do it myself and spend that money on mods.

you can go to just about any respectable german car auto shop and get it serviced, and it will save you money and the result will be the same. You may even start a good relationship with a local shop that can help you with any other future work

That right there is why I figured the Audi dealer should have the know-how, the proper tools and procedures, and patients, to do it correctly.
But it just seems sometimes the tech is lazy.

Also makes you wonder why Audi is recommending changing the plugs at 35k and then again at 75k for a plug that will last the full 75k miles. Sure makes it seem that a lot of the services Audi recommends are profit based and not engineering based time periods. Your engine was tuned for a lot of those miles as well.

Yep, which is exactly why after seeing them and the great shape they were in I won't ever be doing them again. Ha.

I had an utterly terrible experience with a supposedly highly-rated local Indy. I know everyone on here works on their own car, but I bought mine with a Carmax warranty hoping to avoid getting stuck with something I couldn't handle or afford, so I paid up for a newer car thinking it'd be easier to deal with. So far it's been dodging dealer scams and getting turned away for work needed.

To be fair, I got lucky and had a much better oil screen recall experience than many. Just butthurt today cuz anyone with a not fully depreciated car just lost like 10k in the last 2 weeks.

Why do you think that?? I looked at my 2014 A5 market value a couple days ago and it's nearly double what I thought it would be!!

Looking to change coils and plugs.
I will more than likely go with the APR coils, for the value (and increase coil pack output claims.)

As far as spark plugs, I'm going to shoot my tuner a email and ask his opinion.

But what are you guys running?

Hey all first day with new APR coils and plugs installed.
And boy oh boy do I like the improvement. That's also because my coils n plugs were in need of changing lol

Car feels powerful, idle is smooth like butter.
Cheaper than stock n works. I would recommend to the next person.
