Hi Everyone,
New owner of a high mileage A4 2.0T Avant that gave me a big surprise recently. I took it to a local Audi/VW specialist for an oil change and the day before my appointment, I got a low coolant warning. Checked the overflow coolant tank and see low coolant and steam. (not good!)
Fast forward to the following day where i drop my car off at the specialist and it's much worse than I thought. Mechanic quotes me for all of the service in screenshots below.
Service items include:
-New water Pump
-New Front Control Arms (i suspected these were about ready for new)
-Work to fix an oil leak that is manifesting on the top of the engine
Prior to my purchase of the vehicle, the following had already been done:
-Lower Timing chain tensioner replaced 15,000 miles ago with new gasket
-Oil Consumption Recall under warranty - @ 75,000 miles
-New Turbo @ 75,000 miles
-Front and rear diff service within last 10,000 miles
-Regular Oil Changes
Prior to this appointment, I've had no issues starting and driving the vehicle. In total i've racked up approx. 4,500 miles without the oil light coming on. It's definitely using oil as seen in both the MMI and dipstick test, but nowhere even near the bottom of the min level within that interval of mileage.
My question to you all is this: Is it safe to just replace the water pump for now and monitor the oil leakage? I've heard of these cars leaking oil from the upper timing chain cover/gasket as well as the PCV valve. Mostly, i just think that redoing the entire engine seems a bit much, but i'm new to Audi/VW so i'm not as keen on the issues that arise with these cars.
Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.
