    Hallo
Does any of you use the Magnaflow 22960 catalyst and got rid of the P0420 code, my catalyst is damaged and I'm soon getting closer to the emissions test.

A Carb approved cat may not be a bad call, no one is going to shell out for OEM.

    I've been looking at these:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/403637856410

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/224593734825

Unfortunately, not CARB legal, so I'd have to ship to a friend out of state and have him forward it to me. Cost for CARB legal cat is ridiculous.

Check out this one. Too bad that's a Magnaflow cat. The bungs are well placed.

Clearly states may cause MIL to come on. This is mostly because there isn't enough precious metals in the cat to generate a chemical reaction that the ecu likes to see. This is the issue with just about every aftermarket cat. This is also the reason why they are so cheap in comparison. The precious metals in cats are a majority of the cost.

    Four quality levels of cats:

OEM, CARB, EPA and high flow aftermarket.

OEM: Needs to last 8 years / 80,000 miles per Federal requirements
CARB: Higher level of wash coat (California, Maine, Colorado and newer NY cars).
NY spec replacements 1991- 1995 may use an EPA spec. Anything else must be CARB spec.
Maine: 2000 and older may use EPA Spec
EPA Spec replacement: Designed to keep the check engine light off, lowest spec designed to be legal. 5 year 50,000 mile on the shell and end pipes, 25,000 miles on the core for meeting emissions.
Aftermarket Highflow. Minimal level of performance and a big improvement over no cat but almost always triggers a CEL. A tune is usually used to fix the CEL. It wont have labeling to pass a real check but passes a standard visual. If tuned out it will pass in states that don't have emissions delete detection software.

The EPA has cracked down on tuners coding out the CEL and performing illegal changes (thank the rolling coal crowd).

In a perfect world a EPA complaint converter will work just fine. Lots of people install them and the CEL goes away. Some cars are a bit more finnicky and the success rate drops. For the same model it even varies car to car. A higher rated converter like a CARB approved unit has a higher chance of success. There is no magic way to know what you can get away with other than to try.

EPA certified converters do need to meet a certain spec. There are cars that have a converter replaced and still get a CEL because of other issues. It seems reasonable that if you buy a EPA spec converter that does not work you can take it back. The other option is try and find a used OEM part from a "friend". lots of people scrap out working OEM converters. While they are not supposed to sell them they do. I got mint low millage used unit a few years ago that I keep as a spare. Oregon does test.

I would try a EPA level converter , if it works it works, you may get lucky. If not its a CARB level part (or some troubleshooting) . One thing to keep in mind is that you can sell your existing converter to defray the costs. You should have no problem getting a $100++ for it.

Funny Kevin C mentioned the 8 year 80,000 miles and also if they fail you're under warranty within that time-frame. I've seen so many dealerships violate this over and over. If your within 8 years 80k in your vehicle build date, march right into the dealership and get some new cats :).

Huge jacked up diesel pick-em-ups as "identity statements" (never used for anything real, e.g. hauling) and... lunatic assholes... What a hideous trend. It's getting so I dread seeing these guys on the road. They always drive like they think they're playing Grand Theft Auto.

    P.S.- thanks for educating me.

Something tells me a B6 isn't going to be covered under 8/80. The 8/80 is the federal emission standard warranty. It's whichever is first. But sometimes those pussies in California cry about repair bills on their vw's and audi's, then file a class action lawsuit and get warranty extensions for certain repairs they feel are the manufacturer's fault.
