Year: 2001
Mileage: 140,233 (sits in the garage and likely won't go up)
Asking price: $16,000 OBO
Why I'm selling: It sits in the garage and is only driven maybe once a month or when my truck is in the shop for maintenance. My love for the B5 will always be there but I just dont have the motivation or time for it. I do not have any need to sell but it is just sitting and taking up space when someone else could be enjoying it.
History: I originally purchased this car from a fellow VW/Audi forum member in Southern California in 2010 with approximately 98,000 miles on it. It was an ASP stage 2+ with a few cosmetic and suspension mods. Through the years I have modified it here and there, sold it to my brother, then a close friend, and then regained possession in 2017. In between, I bought and sold three other B5s (two stage 3's and an A4 commuter). But this S4 has always stayed in my immediate circle. By the time I regained possession in 2019 the water pump/timing belt needed to be replaced, and the clearcoat on the hood and roof were shot. This work was done over the past year or so and it sits as you see below. Overall it is in good to fair shape for being 20+ years old now. Below I will list mods with approximate milage install dates along with major maintenance, again with an approximate install date. I apologize for not having specifics, but I do not keep a binder or maintain records for my vehicles outside of what I throw in the glove box.
Modifications:
-ASP tune (this tune came with a wifi dongle that connected to ASP's app with the ability to change between 91/93/and 104 octanes, however, the app has long left app stores and the car is currently on the 93 octane map). Already installed when purchased in 2010.
-17x8.5"Enkei NTO3-M lightweight wheels.
-SSAC catback exhaust. Already installed when purchased in 2010.
-Unknown catless downpipes. Already installed when purchased in 2010.
-AWE DTS. Already installed when purchased in 2010.
-Vast stage 3 clutch installed approximately 2012 around 110,000 miles.
-Silicone hose kit. Installed approximately 2012.
-ST Coilovers. Installed approximately 2011.
-034 Intake (non-carbon fiber). Installed approximately 2013.
-JHM FMIC. Installed approximately 2014.
-ECS boost gauge with vent mount. Installed approximately 2019.
-Braum racing seats with Planted sliders. Installed this year. STOCK SEATS INCLUDED.
-Double din amazon special head unit. Installed approximately 2020.
-Used Tiptronic steering wheel (the original started to break down and get sticky from the Florida heat).
-JHM short shift kit installed approximately 2019.
Maintenance:
-Timing belt/water pump done at 139,000. Just done at a euro specialist shop, not DIY. A metal thermostat housing was used instead of plastic the crappy OEM plastic one.
-Brake pads and rotors done at approximately 138,000.
-Full body respray of Nogaro blue done at approximately 138,000 last year by the best body shop in town. This was not a Macco paint job. The total was just over $4,000. It was resprayed due to fading and peeling clear coat and a few dents. This was done for cosmetic reasons and not because of any collisions. The carfax should be clean as it's never been in any accidents that I'm aware of. I have the all receipts and warrenty paperwork on this available.
-New coolant tank and coolant level sensor installed at approximately 138,000.
-New MAP sensor installed due to intermittent boost issues at approximately 138,000.
-Secondary water pump deleted with 034 kit at approximately 138,000.
-New tires (Hankook RS-4 235/45ZR17) at approximately 139,000 (these are almost brand new).
-Outer tie rods replaced at approximately 139,000.
-Window cowl replaced at approximately 138,000 due to fading/cracking.
-Central locking pump was replaced with a reman unit at approximately 137,000.
-Window regulators replaced. Lots of them over the years. I hate these things).
-All headlight bulbs were replaced with LEDs, housings sanded, polished and cleared.
Maintenance items included:
-Stainless steel brake lines
-Full front and rear control arm kits
There has been numerous other small mods and maintenance performed on this car over the years but these are the major and recent things that I could track.
The bad/ugly:
-Light vibration between 60-65 MPH.
-Suspension is old and worn. Coilover bump stops look rough, all suspension rubber is old. I bought a full CA kit but never got around to installing it. It will be included in sale.
-The windshield has a good 1.5" in diameter chip in the upper driverside corner. It does not interfere with driver visibility.
-Rearview mirror started to delaminate so a clip-on wide mirror is being used over it. Visibility is much improved with the aftermarket one.
-Sunroof operation is intermittent. I usually have to crank it back and forth a few times to get it open or closed.
-At one point the sunroof drain lines backed up so there is a water spot on the interior passenger A-pillar.
-The battery compartment under the windshield cowl clogged and caused standing water. This caused the battery tray and some surface rust in that compartment. The clog was fixed, the surface rust sanded and then primed to prevent any further problems. This is only visible if you take off the battery compartment cover.
-Door cards are starting to break down. Between age and Florida heat, the foam and glue is letting go. They still look decent, especially with replaced door grabs (black instead of cheesy blue), but they could use refreshed.
-Small power steering leak. Maybe a nickel-sized spot will be left after a month. It hasn't been a big enough issue for me to take the time to address.
-All the speakers are crap. the door ones sounded terrible so I unplugged them. The rears work but I usually just listen to that sweet engine and exhaust note when I drive.
-Headliner is letting go. I have used headliner retaining pins and it hasn't been an issue. Just cosmetic.
-The upper driver-side b-pillar was cracked during disassembly for the respray. I have had a hard time locating a replacement.
-The airbag module is bad.
I know that I like full transparency when buying a car, especially an older used car. I have been as honest as possible and I do not intend to hide anything. This car is not perfect but it is a much cleaner example than I have seen on the road in many, many years. I have this listed at what I feel is a fair price given the recent timing belt/water pump replacement and fresh respray. I am open to discussions about any issues or concerns.
I prefer to deal in person so you can see all its flaws and highlights, and test drive before buying so that there is no question that you got the car you paid for.
