    Thinking about buying a mk1 q7 with 3.0t motor

    Hello all,

    I’m considering purchasing a first generation Q7, with a 3.0T supercharged engine.

I’m finding 2013-2015 model years with around 70k on the clock for the lower 20’s, and that fits my price point and the vehicle fits my needs/wants.

I’m not afraid of European maintenance, I’ve owned an Audi, and a couple of older bimmers in the past, but the timing chain issue has my slightly concerned.

How common is this? Obviously forums will blow any problems up(i.e. afm/dod issues on my wife’s Escalade, but there are hundreds of thousands running around problem free).

Any other major concerns with this platform that should have me concerned? I’m okay with a couple of 1k/2k hits as it ages, not okay with a 6-8k hit.

    Thanks I’m advance.

I'd say the 3.0t is one of Audis most reliable engines. Which is why they put it in all their other models. I have this engine in my C7 A6 and I love it. No chain issues really. There's the odd case of tensioners being replaced but you can replace them with the engine in and they come out the top. With the Q7, there's even more working space around that engine block and any service on it would be relatively easy to tackle.

Thanks Rush, that seems to reflect the raw data as well. I also just learned that with only a tune I can have this thing into sub 6 second 0-60 times. Very intriguing especially since I can’t seem to ever leave anything stock.

Now to dig in and research the different trims etc.

I was shopping for a Q5 3.0T of similar years based on the recommendation of my trusted VW mechanic of the past 10 years. We needed to upgrade from my wife's Miata to a family car with a baby on the way, and I asked what he thought of the Allroad & Avants. He suggested anything Audi with the Supercharged V6 and pointed me towards the Q5. We stumbled across a beautiful SQ5 (same engine) last year with 80k likes and we absolutely LOVE IT.

We had the transmission fluid flushed as a precaution, and that's it. The Audi manual calls it "lifetime fluid", but every other carmaker that uses the ZF 8 speed recommends flushing the fluids around 60k-80k miles. I'm also listening for timing chain rattle at startup, but haven't noticed anything at all.

I love it so much that I want want a Gen1 Q7 when it's time to upgrade from my GTI. I'd love to get the TDI, but they're hard to come by these days. I'm also considering a Cayenne or Touareg, but neither has 3rd row seats (I'm on the fence) or the Supercharged 6 cylinder that I love so much in the SQ5.

Test drove a 2017 yesterday, believe this is the “4M” model. 3.0T engine. I fell in love, going to up my budget and secure one of these. Question on this particular model, the dash display had a “driver assistance” page but I could not figure out how to enable. Do all of these come standard with lane keep assist etc?

Also, this particular one was from New York, had some minor surface rust on the rear subframe and exhaust but nothing else. I’m not planning on Making that a concern unless these are rust prone?

Had 46k miles on it and was selling for 31k. Seems pretty solid in this market….

    Thanks!
