I live in California and work from home so I drive my cars maybe 10 miles a day if that, that is if I even get out of the house. The only safety issue I could imagine happening is a blow out, which has never happened to me, and I have been modding cars and running stretched tires for over 18 years. Also, in a previous life and career, I drove on a stretched tire for over 100 miles per day commute for over 4 years, and never once had any issues. When I was commuting a lot for work, I have seen cars have blow outs, and its usually a stock tire/wheel setup, and usually it's not a catastrophic, extreme or life threatening event either. Generally the driver just slows down and pulls to the shoulder of the highway. Keep in mind I think tire technology both high end manufacturer and Asian manufacturer has come a long way and it's not like the 90's when FORD Explorers were having blow outs and flipping end over end and bursting into uncontrollable flames... Unfortunately I think there is a lot of misconception behind stretched tires and it's usually from people who have no experience with them.
As for the shoes comparison, like I said, If I was driving a sports car like a GT3 which could benefit from the largest contact patch I could get, and the stickiest compound available, then yes it makes sense to run a high end tire. But if I'm driving 5 to 10 miles a day in a 4,700lb land yacht do I really need all that? Do you really need the latest $200 Nike's to go shoot a basketball around by yourself at the local park? Probably not. On the other hand, would those $200 Nikes help if you're playing in a competitive league? Then yeah they probably would... Guess it all boils down to you and your application. I was just saying most Asian tires have come a long way and are great tires for their price, even when "compromised" and stretched
