Question Winter Tires Vredestein vs Michelin PA4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Its that time of the year again, I'm looking at a new winter set up as I just sold me current 18" Tire Rack set up which included the Michelin PA4 tire and a not so great Andros wheel. Though I liked the tire a lot more than my previous Blizzaks, I still felt I was lacking that winter dry weather handling. Now I know its a winter set up and it wont be like that of a summer tire but still I'd like to maintain some characteristics.

My new winter setup will include an OEM 19" B8 S5 rotor wheel (19x9 et33) and for tires I'm now debating between the Michelin PA4 and the Vredestein Wintrac Pro. Tire Rack seems to rate the Vreds as better in the dry, winter and comfort. Just wondering if others have experience with this tire as I've always been a Michelin fan boy but wanted to try a different winter setup, one that offers a bit more in the dry/wet.

I think the British tyre reviews does a lot of work with Vredestein tires. They’ll probably have them tested if you haven’t already checked. I have the PA4 on the OEM BO wheels now, also don’t love the feel but hey, haven’t crashed yet so I’ll keep ‘em lol.

Another winter brand to look at is Nokian. I have run several sets. Good tires with decent pricing.

Winter Tires Vredestein vs Michelin PA4

I just put the hypertracs on since my winter isn’t as severe. For an ULtra High Performance all season, they perform really well. Very comparable to the Pilot sport AS3+ that I had but much quieter. They absorb bumps pretty well. I forgot how much a difference there was between all seasons vs summer tires.

Time will tell once the snow rolls in this year, haven’t driven in the wet yet.

I will say, for 212 a tire it’s a great value. Take the plunge, they’ve been in business in the EU for a long time.

This. I run the Hakkapeliitta R3's. Similarly priced to Michelin, but considered one of the best winter tires.

Thanks guys, I'm looking for a winter tire that has excellent dry/wet performance in the winter. I know its an odd ask seeing as I'll never get summer tire characteristics in a winter tire but I'd like for it to be as performance built as possible. I'm likely not driving in white out/blizzard conditions so I'm okay sacrificing that. From what I've researched so far, both Michelin and Vredesteins are highly rated with the Vreds slightly edging the Michelin's in dry conditions which is why I was asking if others with Vreds have good things to say about them.

For the price and how comparable to the Michelin tires (all lineups) in this market, I see them as a great tire. I can’t say anything about the winters but I’ve loved vredesteins UHP all season so far. Tires are even more expensive these days. :(

I have the Vredstein Wintrac Pro's on my 2021 S4.. I absolutely loved them last winter after previously using Alpin PA4s.. I downsize my winter setup from the 19s in the summer to 18s, so I'm using them in 245-40/18... I will note one thing though, and I cant really say its the tire's fault.. I'm in NY, and last winter, the potholes were brutal here -- one month after I put the new set of Vredstein's on the car, a pothole caused a bubble.. I bought the tires from Tire Rack, so it was reimbursed with their road hazard - but I had to pay for mount/balance again at my shop.

But -- in the snow, they were awesome.. And on dry pavement, I actually like them better than my summer stock Potenza S001's.. In rain, they are very good as well.. They're quiet.. Plus the ride is a bit smoother than on the 19s.

Agree on the Vredestein tires. The hypertrac uhp tires are great. I have them on my wife’s 340 xdrive all year. They are quiet, ride very good, great in the wet and dry, and very capable in the snow. If you want a tire you can run all the time they are pretty hard to beat for sure. The best all round tire from them if you are taking them off in the spring summer is the quatrac pro all weather tire. They have the severe snow service symbol, but can still be driven year round even in the heat. They are a tire rated to 186mph also. Best of both worlds and are very good in the snow and in the dry or wet. I had these on an older s3 and loved them. A friend has them on his rs3 and feels the same. Go to YouTube and search Vredestein and watch the official release video that motor trend did. They are now a 116 year old company as that video is five years old. You will love them.

I was between these two tires, as well. Ended up going with the Michelin Alpin PA4s because my dealer was doing buy four for the price of three - couldn't say no!

Thats a sweet deal! Which dealer did you go through in the Boston area?

FWIW - I ended up getting the PA4's again, from what I was reading and watching on YouTube, it seemed the Michelin did have slightly better dry characteristics than the Vreds.
