    Who's Changing Their Own Oil?

Curious. It looks like a real PITA considering the hassle. I have the dealer do it while I peruse the lot.

I haven't done it on my RS3 yet but I done it in other cars on my garage. There is a plastic tray but is not difficult. If you are going to keep the car for a while and you feel like doing it yourself and have the space, the tools and the physical motivation I would say go ahead.

I found a third party AUDI authorized dealer a 1/4 mile from Audi and they are very reasonable, they charge me a fraction of an hour and it is a win-win for me because it takes away the hassle of having to lift the car, disposing of the oil, etc. It is one of these things were the money spent is actually fairly justified. Before I did the oil changes at the dealer and I specifically request the oil to be drained and not to use the mityvag.

I'm planning to - just looks like you need on proprietary tool to drain the filter before removing - not that big a deal. I've had too many failures with dealerships to not wrench it myself..

I always do all of my own wrenching, and have changed the oil twice on my '21 TT RS. It's easy, especially once you get used to popping off the belly pan. Sure wish Audi would have put a trap door in the belly pan, like a lot of the other car manufacturers do, to make changing the oil easier. As mentioned previously, be sure to pick up one of the oil filter housing drain hoses. GL

If you purchase your oil change supplies from FCPEuro and use their lifetime warranty you only pay $20 for an oil change (the cost of the return shipping). I've been doing that for years and even use them for brake, DSG and Diff fluid.

Wait a minute, they accept used oil to be exchanged for new oil at no cost but return shipping? So you pay for the oil once and then you’re done? Wow! I knew FCP was good, but that’s amazing!

Yes. Just recently did this on my RS3.

    https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...y-06d115562kt5

You simply order the oil change kit, and then when you're ready for your next oil change you order the kit again. Perform the oil change and keep all of the original packaging (oil bottles, filter box, drain plug bag, etc.). Simply drain the old used oil back into the packaging, submit a "lifetime warranty" replacement on the original oil purchase, and then ship it back. Within 48 hours of receiving, they will refund you the original purchase price.

    Whoa thats awesome.

I've changed the the oil once on the rs3. took my time and was surprised its easier than you think. I drained the filter housing just by poking the nipple in with a flat head (hardway learning style) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFcQ...ardwayLearning

Overall easy. My Audi dealer previously goofed it up, i think they didn't change the crush washer resulting in a slow leak.

Any idea if this works without the kits? I can email them but was hoping you might know. Their kits come with 5W-30 but my engine builder advised me to use 5W-40 so I would need to piece my own kit together.

Yes, they don't care if you order it as a kit. Their guarantee is on everything you buy from them.

You don't need a tool, although it would be a little less messy. You can just push the plug inward a bit with a screwdriver and it will drain the filter housing.

I don't understand. How can this be good business for them? Or are you just returning used stuff as 'what you ordered' and they take it back as a return?

It's a replacement program. You need to essentially buy the product(s) twice before you can return, because you need to buy a replacement for the used up item(s) that was originally purchased from them.

I change it myself. It would cost $380 (lol) at Audi or $50 at home. A little more involved than a standard oil change.

What oil/filter are you using and where are you getting them that cheap? That’s what I pay for 5 liters of oil.

I use a Hengst or Mann filter and Mobil 1 ESP 5w30. I can buy 5qt jugs up here for about $38 bucks each when they go on sale which is several times a year. The filters are about $14 or so, and you need two jugs. $50 was probably a bit of an exaggeration.

Ive changed mine 4 times, super easy, dont "need" any special tools but the filter cap drain tool makes it a bit less of a mess. If you need an excuse to buy tools, i would buy 2 to make your life easier

    1. Filter cap drain tool $12 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VWGB4ZP...9kZXRhaWw&th=1

    2. Filter cap socket $30 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014EN4HSO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mann or Hengst filters are under $10, and the Castrol Synthetic 502/Spec 0W-40 or 5W-40 5 quart jugs are $25 from Walmart.

I agree the business model is messed up but they seem to make it work.

You can buy a jug of oil and a filter, use it, then order another set for your next oil change. Then you can return the old oil and filter and get your money back. You can do this with brakes, suspension components, whatever.

Canadian Tire OE Plus brand oil has 504 vw spec. It was on sale this weekend for $32 for 5L. Filter is about $10 from rock auto. Probably about $60 bucks total because we need 7.5L.

Yeah, it's rebottled Shell Helix Ultra, which is also the same stuff as Pennzoil and Quaker State Euro LX. Good oil but I prefer the Mobil personally. Being in Winnipeg I would think the 0w is a good option for you, it's not really necessary here.

That FCP thing looks real interesting but, I don't use the oil listed in their kit so, I'm not sure if it would be beneficial at all in my case. But that's really cool nonetheless.

Surprised to see so many opinions on oil. The Liquid Moly TopTech 4200 is very good oil. Hard to think it would be worth paying more than return shipping for anything else.

For us track rats, we use the lifetime warranty for NGK plugs, motor oil, brake fluid and pretty much every other fluid that needs regular changing.

No doubt, Jeff. However, all things withstanding, I just use the oil my engine builder recommends. It helps to keep things kosher between him and I in the event that something were to come up.

The policy applies to any oil on their site, not just the kits.

Mine recommended a high quality fully synthetic 5w-40 so I’m going with Liqui Molygen.

Good to know. I knew it had to be a major brand rebottled. Love the price and convenience.

So long as I'm not running full E all the time (I won't be) or full sending it a lot, I can run Motul Sport. If I am, he recommends Motul Esther. Either doing a full oil change after each event or no-later-than 3k miles.

What was the price to ship the used Oil & Filter back to FCP Euro?

    I plan to run this Oil Change Kit w/ the Liqui Moly 5W40 Molygen in my B8 S5 4.2 V8 --> https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...-079198405ekt7

At $106.93 for 9 Liters, plus the Mahle Filter & a Crush Washer for the first oil change, I'm wondering what net credit on each subsequent oil purchase would be.

I haven't paid someone to change oil since....2003? Not a brag. I wish I could afford to have someone change my oil. Alimony/child support sucks ass (Imagine being broke af, when you make good money)

    Who's Changing Their Own Oil?

I consider myself to be fairly handy and strong at the same time and I was unable to get the filter out without a quick trip to the local AutoZone to get a filter wrench for my TTRS.

    =)
Not that hard to imagine when inflation is out of control and $10k/month doesn’t do sh!t anymore.
