Will an a4 B9 (2018) ignition coil fits to A4 B8 (2011)? I am replacing my old ignition coils as it has not been changed since and already ran for 113k miles.

B8.0 used Gen2 2.0T engines. B9.0 used Gen3 2.0T engines. Completely different coils. Not compatible in any way.

    Example of a Gen2 coil:

What's the difference other than being red? I can only guess higher spark energy.

For completeness, the current black cap coil is 07K 905 715 G and the current red cap coil is 06E 905 115 G.
    Or APR coils: https://www.goapr.com/platform/audi/..._-_pq35_style/
Or other third-party coils from Bosch, Denso, etc.

"R8" is a bit of a misnomer, since the red caps are the same coils used on the S4/S5 3.0T, among other applications. Appears the origin of the 06E... coil line was the AWA 4-cyl engine (the original 2.0 FSI, not sold in the US) in the B6 A4.

Oh, it's the coils used on the R8 (except the CMPA engine in the Gen1, for whatever reason, which used the black caps), but saying it's used in many, many other engines and vehicles besides the R8. And as I noted, the line actually originated in a 4-cyl A4.

AND if there is a difference are they purposely paired with Dwell tuning/timing to take advantage of it.

If we look at NGK's website (ngksparkplugs.com) and ask it what are the correct coils for a 2011 A4 4-cyl, we get the U5015, not U5013.

If we instead ask for the correct coils for a 2011 S4 6-cyl, we get the U5014.

So U5015 would be "the black cap" coil (06H..., 07K...), U5014 would be "the red cap" coil (06E...), and U5013 is for some other coil line (turns out to be the 06C... line). Looking at the pics of the three, it's clear the U5013 is a different form in the metal stem.

all i know is after owning a b7 and b8 the coils were just not that reliable. since putting the red top ( maybe incorrectly but commonly known as R8 coils) i have not replaced one since in either car in over 5 years.
