Lots of threads note that the only possible fix for scratched aluminum trim is to wrap with vinyl. I ended up at first wrapping mine but ultimately was not happy.
My rear trim was in good shape and I was able to use it for comparison to see if my results were passable.
I started with a drivers side door trim piece to see if I could get it to match. After getting good results, I moved onto the larger pieces. I recommend doing the same.
Here are the steps performed:
1. Remove trim (several YouTube videos on this)
2. Remove all items in the trim (HVAC controls, headlights, etc.)
3. Use 120 grit sandpaper. Sand in one direction. There’s a clear coat on the trim, once you sand through it, you will be down to bare metal. You’ll need to get to this point to effectively remove scratches. You’ll know when you get there are the trim will no longer have a full Matt finish. In full sunlight it will be bright and glare.
4. Once you have the scratches removed, carefully sand in one direction so the grain is straight just like the original trim.
5. Use a matte finish clear coat and spray the trim. I successfully used clear polyurethane.
6. Repeat if necessary in multiple coats. You’ll know when you have enough coverage as any areas that appear bright will be uniform.
I’ll try to post some photos but thought I’d share to see if anyone has happened upon the same conclusion.
I purchased my car used and for whatever reason the trim was really beat up. After trying to find a deal on used trim but with no luck, I wrapped but was never happy.
