Red steering wheel of death light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

So, I went on vacation for a week. My 2016 audi a3 quattro sat without being ran. First day back went to go to work. Wouldn't start. Jumped with a Schumacher battery charger with 200amp jump assist. 12 hours later same thing. Got jumpstart(cables) drove home. Took optima from my 06 audi b6. Popped in and put on charge using alternator. Let run for hour. Shut off restart and ran for another hour. Shut off sat for 2 hours. Went to start to go to work. No joy. Jumpstart cables with wife's car. Next morning jumpstart(cables again) now red steering wheel light. Drove home and went for new battery at steve shannon(Interstate battery) coded to car. Told them about steering. Got car back they said out of their league. Dealer issue. Codes from Steve Shannon are U140100(function restriction due to excessive voltage), B200Ff0(internal malfunction), B200000(ctrl. Module faulty active status). Also, my car has the highline backup camera from factory( with yellow lines that indicate steering direction). Those yellow lines are no longer on backup camera. I don't have vagcom nor does any garage around me but am just about to pull the trigger on the 3vin hexv2. I understand can bus because I work on forklifts but can't find diagrams that tell me how they are connected together In the a3. I have checked all engine compartment fuses and coil side of relays and all are good. Stealership says if steering rack needs replacing its 3400$. Trying to avoid that at all costs. Can it be my steering angle sensor is blown? What provides the information to the highline camera? Is there a fuse or relay that goes to steering angle sensor that I can double check. Can I change the steering assist motor and recode once I have hexv2? Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I am in northeast PA if someone is local.

    How was the 2016's battery?

FYI...any time the A3 looses its 12v like when changing a battery it goes whacky nuts!

Anytime the battery is about to go out the car does whacky electrical issues....

Some items effected by the loss of the 12v/battery require an OBD tool to reset the codes.

Reading your post above gives me the impression it might be whats not charging the battery...alternator???

The issue with these alterntors is they have a pulley with a clutch on it...and they tend to go bad.

Do you have a volt meter?

I would stop hesitating and buy vcds / vagcom. I'm not skilled with a wrench and don't have any experience with your symptoms so can't offer direct advice. The vcds scan will give you alot more info than you got from the first shop regarding exactly when (day / time), under what conditions (rpm, throttle angle, etc) and how often each error is occurring. Might be more codes that you could also Google.

Vcds has given me the power to be able to tell mechanics what to fix (sometimes after some googling / forum posting - vcds has its own forums too) vs ask them what is wrong.

Also, MikTip seems to know what he's talking about from other posts so worth listening to him.

Yes, I have a volt meter both analog and digital. To answer your first question the eye on the original(not factory) diehard indicated that it was shot which i discovered on day two which is why I tried the optima. The optima does not hold a charge also, however the garage that I got the interstate from put the optima on a pulse charger in an attempt to "bring it back". Still waiting to hear how that turns out but I degress. Any insight on the highline camera input?

Put a good/new battery in, clear the codes and see if they come back. If they do, I would replace the steering angle sensor ( clock spring) which is what makes the lines move on your back up camera

Thanks for all the input. I currently have a brand new Interstate battery in and I received a little miracle. I stopped to check on the optima battery charge being done by the garage that I got the new battery. Dead. But, I bought it August of 2020 and there is a 3 year free replacement warranty. So got my 300$ back and ordered the rosstech hex-v2. Should be here tomorrow or Monday so I will check the codes, try and clear them, and report back what I find. Thanks again for all the responses hopefully after I get the vcds I can start to return the favor.

Did we program the battery to the car? Or vice versa or whatever our dumb cars need? Lol

Just chiming in, stop jumping your car. I have a friend here who kept jumping his Tiguan and ended up frying the steering rack module and his steering wheel lock module. He was also plugging and unplugging the harnesses a lot while troubleshooting without disconnecting his battery first. There's a few stories around of vag products being very sensitive to jump starts and frying electricals.

We ended up fixing his steering wheel lock module by replacing a fried diode, but the steering rack had to be fully replaced.

I know it's a different chassis, but I had this with my MK5 Jetta. It was a corroded chassis ground. The electric steering racks pull a lot of amps. I found all the chassis grounds I could get my hands on, cleaned them all and did a VCDS adaptation.
I think the dealership wanted a couple grand to replace the rack, which was total BS. Cost me $0 and a few hours to fix.
    Hope this helps!

The garage that I got it from(Steve Shannon) said that they did code it to the car, but the steering problem happened before the new battery.

I second this, saw this while researching the issue. Apparently there's a ground on top of the eps rack that can become disconnected.

Thanks, I'll check into that. I was wondering (while I wait for my vag com, looks like Tuesday or Wed delivery) can I disconnect my battery, wait 30 minutes, and using a jumper wire between positive and negative battery cables to drain internal equipment battery, then reattach to see if that clears codes?

I had B2000 and B200F codes on the steering rack on my TT. There is no way to reset them. I had to replace the rack. The only way to fix it on the old rack is to reprogram the eprom with special tool that I didn't feel comfortable with.

Not to beat a dead horse, I got my rosstech hex-v2 today and here is my scan after clearing stored docs. It looks like I need a steering module. The scan reveals 2 part numbers one ending in r and one in s. Does it matter which one I get, and will they be up and play. My research suggests the donor car had to have the same options as my car. How detailed do those options have to be? Are they referring to mldel, package, or even more detailed than that. If I get the right part and the options don't match then I have to code it to the car, right. And then do adaptation so it is calibrated correctly. Can vcds do this if the part numbers match exactly? Thanks again for everybody's input

1063 or higher is the number you need. Still in 1000's. This is for cars without mode selection ( comfort, sport, dynamic). 50xx is for cars with button for selection. The number is on the small sticker with 3d bar code on the power steering module. Where are you located? I have a spare power steering rack for your car. You need to replace the rack with the module because they are coded together.

Steering adaptations can be done within vcds. Ross Tech wiki has detailed instructions on how to do so.

Is the steering module separable from the rack? If so, I may be interested in attempting a repair of the module.

Yes, I've heard that is possible. But I'm not sure how the 1063 number that is on the qr code sticker determines what will work on my car without needing to do adaptation. (Plug n play). I sent evo v a pm asking if a rack with 1061 would work but haven't heard back yet. I can't find any 1063 in the US online right now that aren't prohibitly expensive.

As far as the module goes, I do not know at this time. I am also interested in trying to clear the eeprom. From what I've researched, the pathway to the eeprom is encrypted which, if I'm not mistaken, would require removal from the board, an eeprom read and write device. Or maybe a high intensity UV light would erase it. But I don't know what information is stored in the eeprom itself. Is it just a 0 or 1 or is it more than that. If I take it to the dealer(which is most likely my only option at this point), I will try really hard to get them to reflash the module(if its not damaged) from the database in Germany. I also know that there is some guy named Jack in Poland that can do this but I don't know its possible for him to do it for a steering module. From what I've read he mostly does component protection resets.
I would love to hear how you would proceed if the module were removaable.

    UPDATE:

So, I took my car to the dealer and sure enough, they said there was an internal fault in the steering module. Quote for new rack $2500. There is only 1 new rack in "the country" and is already spoken for. New ones from (GERMANY?) won't arrive in the states for another month. A used one(Gasp) will save me 1200 if it codes to the car. I told them to lift the car 6 inches off the ground and hook it up before installing it. We'll see how it goes(fingers crossed),(sigh).

If you can get rhe old rack, keep it. I'm still interested in the baord. Obviously if they charge you extra to keep it, don't. They might want to keep it for a core so they can refurbish it.
