    Derpikarp's S5 Sportback Build Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was going to start a build thread for my B9 S4 but I ended up trading it in for an S5 SB instead. Figured I should try to keep track of the things that I'm doing to my car and the rough costs associated with it.

    Cost of the vehicle:
$50,673 with 28.5k miles (including taxes, doc fees, etc.)

    Options:
    Daytona Grey Metallic
    Prestige
    Dynamic Steering
Warm Weather Package (Sofas with ventiation)
    Driver Assistance Package
    S Sport Package
    19 Inch "Cavo" Wheels
    Carbon Atlas Inlays

Picture of the car when I first got it:

Picture of the car as it sits now:

    RS Grill ($200 on ebay)
New parking sensors for RS Grill ($95.41 from ebay)
JC Sportsline Front Lip (Paint matched, Daytona Grey) ($300 with paint)

    Need to install:
JC Sportsline Rear Carbon Diffuser (also bought the gloss black version, trying to decide on which to use) ($250 including shipping)
JC Sportsline Rear Spoiler for S5 SB (On the fence about this, will try to test fit it soon) ($125 including shipping)
APR HPFP ($600 including a core pump)
Wagner Rep. FMIC ($350 including shipping)
Catless DP with mini cat ($400 including shipping)

I refuse to go back and add up what I've spent on mods. I have an idea of what it was, and I don't plan to think about it

(A small part) of the self justification on getting a RS5 vs a S5 was mods. There was a nice S5 Sportback Prestige that I had checked out. It was around $15k less than the RS5. I figure I'd put about $10k into my old S4 in mods and would end up doing the same thing on the S5, so the 'real' difference was only $5k. Now, the question is, whether or not I'll mod the RS5 much. Maybe ABT springs, but I can't think of much else the car needs...

I'm in at $12k just in wheels and PPF/coating/tint.

Haven't gotten into any of the engine/suspension/carbon fiber/RS6/RS7 interior parts...

    Fu&K - Or stereo.

    On an RS5.

I didn't get an RS6 because it wouldn't fit in the garage. Shoulda found a larger garage.

I initially cross shopped an S5, RS5 and an X3MC. I test drove a B9 RS5 and felt like it was barely better than my B9 S4 with a 20-25k premium over the S4/S5. I figured I could add a bit more in mods to it and it'd be similar but I'd be able to tinker more with the car. The X3MC felt a bit sluggish for whatever reason in stock form but then again I had a JB4 on my S4. I'd say full send with the mods but I might be a little bit biased.

I actually have an RS6 on order but I'm debating on whether I should go through with it or not. I feel like once the S5 is fully modded, I'd probably be content with it over an RS6 for the time being. I'm currently waiting for the market to die down a bit until I jump back into a P Car, loved my Boxster but couldn't say no to a hefty check over what I paid for it.

I own a 19 S4 and a 20 X3M, I can tell you stock for stock the X3M is faster. Now that my S4 is tuned it is faster than the X3M. Once I tune the X3M though it will be game over, those SUV's can flat out move once tuned.

Okay, I'm not counting PPF/tint as a mod, because it would go on anything I bought. I also saved a bunch of cash by doing my own CQuartz, so there's that...

For sure, it just felt slower to me for whatever reason. I think it's because the X3MC had more of a linear pedal compared to a more sort of twitchy or on/off feel in the S4 with a JB4. I've also seen what the S58s can do with just a tune, they're beasts.

I have all of the Gtechniq stuff. Probably $600 worth of products is my guess.

PPF is coated with Halo. Wheels with C5, and CSL/EXoV4, interior has whatever the one.

Yeah, I have a full shelf in the garage. Tint/PPF for the whole car was around $7k. Wheels were close to $5k.

TTE810 ordered! Hopefully by the time they finish rebuilding the core and send it back, 034's TTE810 file is available.

Everything's bigger in Texas . In all seriousness, I've always planned to upgrade to a 810 when they first came out. It really doesn't make much sense getting a 710 now and then sending it back in and waiting another 30-60 days for it to be rebuilt into an 810.

The car has been under the knife for about a week now while I slowly install parts. Ran into a bit of a hiccup with the PSS10s with missing parts and connectors not fitting properly (still trying to get this resolved). Here's a bit of an update picture though!

    RS Grill+Lip installed:

    PSS10 kit with Damptronic:

I'm going to try adding clear coat to the emblem holder since it looks a bit off in matte.

I'll try to do a write up on installing the coilovers and subframe mounts Inserts soon!

Any issues with the front camera? Did you have to get the front radar recalibrated? And what ebay seller did you get the grille from? Assuming you didn't have any issues.. Thanks.

The car is still on the jacks unfortunately but I've heard from others that have bought the same grille that they didn't need to get the sensors recalibrated.

I bought the grille from here:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/274422943100

Also bought these sensors for the crash bar (I don't think it'd be an issue on the 18's since from what I've heard, the 19's had a crash bar revision):

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/352716520525

    Hope that helps!

Still a work in progress, haven't been able to drive the car for close to a month now.

    Updates:

Coilovers - I was attempting to install Bilstein PSS10 Coilovers but I ended up having a fair amount of issues. The kit came with some missing hardware (brand new kit) and some hardware that didn't fit. Ultimately, it took about 2-3 weeks and there wasn't any news on Bilstein's end so I decided to just slap on a KW HAS kit that I bought a while back. Shout out to @Mops for fighting against Bilstein for me to try to get the missing parts shipped, he harassed them daily for me and did the best that he could!

Installing the KW HAS kit was fairly easy and straight forward, reinstalling the rear camber bolt was a PITA (ended up taking 3-4 hours, lots of jacking the rear control arm up and down).

RS Grille - Fairly straight forward, I opted to swap the chrome accent piece into the RS grille since I liked the grey and silver theme that I had going on. The front sensors did prove to be an issue on my car but I think that's mostly because I have a 19MY (from what I've heard, revisions were made compared to the 18MY). Ended up ordering these sensors in black and they fit like a charm!

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/352716520525

Blacked out headlights - I bought a pair of blacked out headlights from another user (inside chrome bits were painted black). Upon initial inspection, the seal was starting to ooz out and paint job seemed fairly poor. I'm going to contact a few shops locally to see if anyone would be able to fix this, most likely going to go for the Euro Spec RS5 blacked out look instead of the complete black out look.

Not too much else to report on, car is still on jacks and being worked on every other dayish. Here are some pictures! Will be doing a write up of each install once the car is fully done.

    Comparison of the headlights:

I've decided to trade in my S5 and have began parting it out!

I couldn't resist the PCar bug, going to be keeping an eye out for either a GT4/Spyder or 991.2/992 Turbo S! I'm suspecting prices to come down relatively hard pretty soon so I'm likely just going to be borrowing my sister/dad's car for now.

    On an RS5.

I didn't get an RS6 because it wouldn't fit in the garage. Shoulda found a larger garage.
