    CREC supercharger clutch welding

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone here weld CREC supercharger clutches or have information on the process for fabrication?

I’m going into limp mode immediately with a ported supercharger and it’s throwing codes for the clutch… don’t know what to do here besides have a fabrication shop or someone who’s familiar with these weld/bolt it to create a solid hub - don’t want to risk buying a new clutch and overspinning a $700 part.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A few have done it, to my knowledge there are no tunes currently available that disable the check engine light though so you'll have to deal with that....

I’m good with a check engine light so long as it doesn’t throw me into limp mode.

Hit up my boys @superchargedaudi sport or @s4vag3_s4 on IG for info on clutch welding. I had one of the first welded clothes Shane aka supercharged audi sport did but we experienced a failure from a secondary weak point that my buddy mark aka s4vag3 fixed and it was fine until I traded the car. I remember Shane had a bolt solution but idk if it ever held up like the welding.

I will second contacting supercharged Audi sport on Instagram. He now welds two locations and doesn't do any bolts which has been bulletproof on multiple motors. He is located in upstate NY so it could be an easy drive for you as it only takes him a few hours to complete the process.

IE will send out a 'welded clutch' file that removes the check engine light if you request it from them (but you have to be tuned with them, obviously)

Edit: I plan to drive up from Philly to see him in the coming weeks- hardest part is pulling the SC off to remove the clutch assembly.

Interesting. I reached out to IE in March saying I’d switch to their tune if they would give me a version that wouldn’t throw a check engine light and was told that this was not a feature that was available and no plan to make that available to the public. Guess they don’t want my money….

Sounds like you are talking about user Shane Horning on here.

They can certainly do that, I had them do it for me towards the end of my beta program. However it's ultimately up to Carter if he wants to offer it to OTS guys. I can't imagine there's a liability involved with it, as that's why they wouldn't offer something. In any case I'd contact support@ie rather than sales if that's who you contacted.

I'd follow @wr3nchen on IG. He took over the mantle of the CREC platform and I'm sure he'll dyno his car soon. I'm expecting ~450whp for E60 dual pulley on stock blower. All depends if they had to pull back the timing if that fuel system couldn't handle it at max timing. My fuel system was tapped at E30 with an autotech hpfp and ported blower/82mm tb. Made 483whp

    ---edit---

These numbers are on a mustang dyno, even then there can be variance

Yeah I think I got to someone in sales, maybe I'll try the support side to see if they are able to give me better info.

Thanks! I ended up using DT Performance in New Jersey bc the they could turn it around asap. I did contact Shane and the process seems very straight forward. He said he stopped using the bolt because of mixed results.

Hopefully it holds up… the CREC seems over complicated for no reason…. you know this, I’m figuring it out for myself one painful step at a time.

The implausible signal is likely why your bypass is stuck open not letting you make boost. Did you forget to plug the clutch sensor back in or somehow damage it? I got that code when I tried a ctub rotor pack and snout and couldn't get around getting the bypass to close without the sensor receiving info. The clutch stuck open isn't a big deal and you'd expect it.

Thanks! All seems straight forward - do you know of anyway to test for damage to that sensor?

Maybe a voltage tester? Looking more clearly at your codes (VCDS is so cluttered) everything points to a wiring issue since you have implausible signal, short to ground, and electric malfunction. The clutch being welded wouldn't cause that I'm pretty confident, just the stuck open code.

It’s definitely a weird issue… wiring is all connected, I haven’t traced everything with a voltage tester yet. I can clear the codes out and car runs fine for a fair amount of time (15-30+ minutes), with boost, and eventually it will throw those same codes again.

I’ve got a fun weekend ahead of me…

A little contact cleaner and wipe-down of the connections and those electric codes are gone. I still have the stuck open code and some exhaust codes bc of test pipes, and unfortunately, still get an EPC/limp mode hitting around 4500 rpm under almost any load. Not sure if it’s still clutch related, but the previous codes are suspicious. The car runs perfectly fine otherwise, so I’m also suspicious of the tune (APR stage 2+) not working out well with a ported supercharger. Mechanically, I do get one single click sound when starting to drive or coming to a stop that sounds like an actuator or solenoid opening or closing. Not sure if this is the welded supercharger clutch as well, but it’s new.

I ordered a brand new supercharger clutch to compare/evaluate against my original one and the welded one. Another tear-down of everything will happen once that’s in.

Just wanted to post results here to not leave this another unsolved thread…

I contacted Shane / @superchargedaudisport as others here suggested and he was a huge help. Thank you for that recommendation!

The clutch DT worked on was faulty and broken. Shane was able to weld a new clutch for me and that solved almost everything. In addition to that, I replaced MAP+speed sensors and the bypass valve, and later smoked the system which showed some air leaks in need of attention.

It took a lot of time to work through everything, but now it’s all sorted. The only item remaining is a tune to remove the CEL code for the welded clutch.

How does the car run on the DT performance tune ? I wish they offered my veriety in octane. Was thinking about switching but numbers were vague

What hpfp did you run ? I used the one for the Mk4 as suggested and it would go into limp mode.

I’m still running an APR tune… DT said they can code out the check engine light from the welded clutch, but haven’t gotten into any details or anything with them yet. Waiting/Hoping IE comes through with more for this platform.
