Better Family Car: A6 or Q5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello Everyone,

I'm a long time Audi die-hard fan, so not new to the brand. I've had a B5 A4 and currently drive a B6 A4 USP:

    Old B5: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...4/IMG_0569.jpg

    Current Car: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps76v6ranm.jpg

    Question:

I had kiddo #2 recently (woohoo!), and as I am trying to think a bit longer-term, it's probably time to start looking into something that will support my growing family. Two car-seats in the back of my B6 is starting to get really tight, so I think it's a good time to start looking at something bigger. So, A6 vs. Q5 is what I've narrowed my options down to. Not sure if anyone has gone through a similar exercise and landed on the A6 or Q5, but just looking for some opinions on why you ended up with your ride.

I know both platforms (A6 and Q5) can be fitted with the 3.0T, and I am guessing they are just tuned differently. I wish Audi still made the manual transmission an option on the A6, but alas, I guess I will settle for the slush-box transmission in either case. If there's anything else I should keep in mind, please let me know.

Thanks in advance to everyone for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated! =)

If you are prioritizing the back seat space, the A6 is the way to go. I cross shopped the SQ5 and A6 a couple years ago. The Q5 is an A4 on stilts. Much more passenger room in the A6. If you want the function of the SUV, that’s a different story. Go sit in them. You will see what I mean. I ended up with a C6.5 Avant. Couldn’t be happier.

What he said and his avant is cool!

My C5 S6 avant had more rear space than my SQ5, but since there are no more A6 based wagons in my price range, it was my best choice.
If you can swing an A6 allroad, give it a look.

I sold my 2015 A6 and am now in a 2018 SQ5 Prestige. On paper, the A6 is longer which would equate to more backseat room, but in reality I find the SQ5 more roomy. I have two young kids, 3 and 7 years old. In the A6 it was a lot more difficult to get them buckled in the car seats/booster seats and they would be easily kicking the back of my seats. In the SQ5, they seam to have more room, less kicking of the seats, and there is more headroom as well.

There is a good amount of trunk space in the A6, but the functionality of the SUV liftgate makes loading easier. I also have a roof rack and cargo box. I used it a lot with the A6 because larger packages wouldn't fit in the trunk and it was a pain to drop the seats with the kids car seats. One thing I like about the SQ5 is that the seats are split 40/20/40, so even with the kids car seats I can still drop the middle section without having to move the car seats for long items. The A6 had a pass through, but it was small and the seats were 60/40 split.

I find the overall function of the SQ5 vastly superior to the A6.

I don't disagree that the SQ5 is a "dad bod S4", but it feels like it has more functional space than my old A6.

I went from an A6 to an SQ5 and it's true - the A6 definitely felt roomier in the back. With two kids, that's probably pretty important. I still prefer my SQ5, but you should definitely test drive both.

S6 and SQ5 current vehicles. S6/A6 for the back seat comfort/ accessibility.

The A6 is a much bigger car, you don’t realize it until you get inside one. Think of the SQ5 as just a taller A4 avant, not a whole lot bigger inside than your B6. If you’re going to be hauling two kids I’d be looking into a Q7/SQ7or8, or an S6/A6.

I debated between the S6 and the SQ5. I ended up buying the SQ5 for a few reasons.

First, the 2018 S6 has that super outdated interior where as the SQ5 got a complete overhaul that year. Much nicer. The S6 felt so dated!

Second, the height helps get the kids in and out. Bending over to put a kid or baby in a seat of a car is not easy. Even though the S6 has more leg room, for my 4yr old and infant, they don’t really need it. We can fit both front and rear facing car seats without too much compromise on the front seat position and I’m 6’2” wife is 5’6”.

The addition of way more cargo space and in my opinion a much better looking car made it a fairly easy choice. I did want that V8TT in the S6 but the cons outweighed the benefits for me personally.

Either way you’ll have a great experience but an SUV is really convenient. I fought getting one for years. Swore I’d never drive one. Well here I am and I love my car. Best car I’ve ever owned and my last 2 cars were brand new Audis.

    I have a 2019 SQ5 prestige stage 1 e85 on abt lowering springs and 20x10 wheels.

With that being said if I could get a good deal on an RS7/RS6 I’d hop on it in a heart beat. Unlikely in this market though.

    Much better looking?

I love my SQ5, but come on now - the C7.5 A6/S6 is one of the best looking cars Audi has ever made.
