Windshield replacement - Dealer using OEM OR Safelite ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,
This is the first time my Audi Q7 has a crack in the windshield. Is it better to get it replaced from a dealer suggesting they will use OEM parts ? Or is it OK to use Safelite (default from insurance) ?
    Any pros and cons ?

btw - Safelite quoted $896 whereas the dealer quoted $2600. I am assuming the insurance will fully cover (after my deductible) even if I use the dealer.

I had a rock fly up and add a noticeable crack on my SQ8 within the first month of getting it. I had it fixed at Safelite for ~$200. That was over a year ago, and I totally forgot about it until reading this post. Seems pretty good to me!

If there is an aftermarket (non-Audi) windshield available, your insurance will likely cover the amount up to the cost of said aftermarket windshield. At least that is what happened with me for my C5's windshield--I had to fork out the rest out of pocket.

On my C7, because it is both acoustic and coated for HUD, that went thru the dealership with no issues.

Note: These are replacements and not for repairing a chip/crack (which have limits to what can be fixed).

OEM not Safelite. Never going back. Man I had them mess up my Q7 rear view mirror trim and the exterior side gaskets. Plus the glass was not a perfect fit, so the wipers don’t make 100% contact at the bottom of the glass for the first 10”-12” of the sweep.

I had the glass replaced at the dealer for my S4 and it’s perfect.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and inputs. Does the insurance cover fully (after deductible) when using dealer / OEM ?

It might depend on your insurance. I just got a rock chip and crack in my 3mo old SQ7. Insurance said the dealer won't take an insurance check, but they'd reimburse me the entire cost minus my deductible after the dealer completes the work. I asked insurance and they said they HAVE to use (or cover?) factory glass no matter where I would take it. I'm not sure if its because of the age of the car, or what. No idea why.

For what it’s worth you can save yourself some money by having Safelite install OE glass. Just ask them to price and source for your vehicle. I just went through this.

Just replaced the glass on my ‘21 SQ5 at the dealership. State Farm covered the whole invoice but did reimburse me. It was a little on $3000 including the calibration for the camera. When I asked they said they cover OEM glass for now since the car is brand new, but not sure when they start denying it.
