I wanted to do a review focused on what shaving rotational mass can do to performance by doing a before and after Dragy session with my stock black optics wheel which weight 26 pounds and do another run the next day with these lighter wheels which weigh 21 pounds but Mother Nature had other plans. It’s rained for all the days I had set aside to do this testing so I was unable to do that. I do have lots of Dragy pulls from November to May but DA and temp won’t be close to what it is now in June so I’ll have to wait till Fall to see if shedding the weight makes the car quicker than my personal bests in those similar conditions. Any comparison to those times would just be the lighter wheels making me not run even slower as DA creeps past +1000.
On to the review.
The wheels come nicely packaged with a protective cover and plastic rim protector.

The inside barrel/lip is knurled to help keep the tire from shifting during launches and heavy acceleration.

These wheels allow you to use factory center caps, which is a nice feature. My car didn’t come with factory lug covers so I’ll have to buy some and see which style might fit. The older style which looks like a graduation cap will probably fit.

These wheels are 19x8.5 ET45 which is a stock size. They are 66.5 CB and come with 57.1 rings for older Audi and VW cars. Some people have commented to me that these specs are kind of lame. “Why aren’t they wider?” Well, width adds mass and you don’t want mass on a light weight wheel. Plus, these cars don’t need help getting traction so the added width will just add weight. When you’re trying to keep a wheel light, running the factory spec is going to give you the lightest weight you can get in most cases. And there’s always spacers if the ET bothers you. A 10mm spacer would make the rear look about perfect in my opinion.
My first impression driving on them is the car definitely feels different. Throttle response is quicker. Turning input feels a little sharper. The change I feel the most is with braking. The car feels like it’s going through less effort to stop. Now I only dropped 5 pounds per wheel but if you have a heavier wheel like 19 inch Rotors, which weigh about 30 pounds each or factory 20’s which will weigh even more, this should feel even more improved.
I look forward to the fall when DA starts to drop again to see if I can beat my APR Stage 1 93 personal bests done in ideal conditions/negative DA
