APR A01 19x8.5 flow formed wheel review

I wanted to do a review focused on what shaving rotational mass can do to performance by doing a before and after Dragy session with my stock black optics wheel which weight 26 pounds and do another run the next day with these lighter wheels which weigh 21 pounds but Mother Nature had other plans. It’s rained for all the days I had set aside to do this testing so I was unable to do that. I do have lots of Dragy pulls from November to May but DA and temp won’t be close to what it is now in June so I’ll have to wait till Fall to see if shedding the weight makes the car quicker than my personal bests in those similar conditions. Any comparison to those times would just be the lighter wheels making me not run even slower as DA creeps past +1000.

    On to the review.

The wheels come nicely packaged with a protective cover and plastic rim protector.

The inside barrel/lip is knurled to help keep the tire from shifting during launches and heavy acceleration.

These wheels allow you to use factory center caps, which is a nice feature. My car didn’t come with factory lug covers so I’ll have to buy some and see which style might fit. The older style which looks like a graduation cap will probably fit.

These wheels are 19x8.5 ET45 which is a stock size. They are 66.5 CB and come with 57.1 rings for older Audi and VW cars. Some people have commented to me that these specs are kind of lame. “Why aren’t they wider?” Well, width adds mass and you don’t want mass on a light weight wheel. Plus, these cars don’t need help getting traction so the added width will just add weight. When you’re trying to keep a wheel light, running the factory spec is going to give you the lightest weight you can get in most cases. And there’s always spacers if the ET bothers you. A 10mm spacer would make the rear look about perfect in my opinion.

My first impression driving on them is the car definitely feels different. Throttle response is quicker. Turning input feels a little sharper. The change I feel the most is with braking. The car feels like it’s going through less effort to stop. Now I only dropped 5 pounds per wheel but if you have a heavier wheel like 19 inch Rotors, which weigh about 30 pounds each or factory 20’s which will weigh even more, this should feel even more improved.

I look forward to the fall when DA starts to drop again to see if I can beat my APR Stage 1 93 personal bests done in ideal conditions/negative DA

Now I know the accuracy of the fuel economy gauge in the cluster can be affected by a lot of variables but with my old wheels I have never hit 34 MPG on my 20 mile back road commute to work. The most has been about 32 if I drive real conservatively. Lighter wheels will definitely affect your fuel economy. How much that can be? Can’t say for sure.

At this rate, buying lighter wheels could pay for themselves after a year or 2 due to gas savings 🤣

You’re welcome. I really like them too. A very familiar style with a slight twist.

APR A01 19x8.5 flow formed wheel review

Got some acceleration data today. I ran out of room so I couldn’t do a full quarter mile. Had to stop at the eighth mile.

So before I put these lighter wheels on, the best 0-60 I have ever done on a stage 1 tune was 3.62 seconds in -1400 DA. This is my personal best up until today.

    -1400 DA run
    Image1655552888.719142.jpg

Today I beat my personal best with 2200 feet higher DA than that run. The only change was the wheels. Same tires, same tune, no race gas, no E85 mixed in, full interior weight with spare tire and no hardware upgrades other than the wheels. I can’t wait to see what the car can do when DA stays negative all day in October 🤣

+800 DA run. The car hooked up exceptionally well!!
    Image1655553155.424457.jpg

So do lighter wheels make your car perform better? The data suggests yes they do. I believe under similar conditions the improvement would be even more.

The weight reduction from the wheels also made me have to lower my launch control RPM by 1000 RPM. The car would spin a ton if I launched that the same RPM I used for my stock wheels.

If I had enough space to run a 1/4 I believe I could have run an 11.7x today or at least match my 11.8 personal best. I let off after the 1/8th and still coasted into a 12.0 1/4 🤣

    1/8th mile data.

My personal best 1/8th mile run done in -1400 DA.

Today I was able to basically match my personal best 1/8th mile, give or take, with 2200 higher DA.

DA is going play a big part in performance with the factory heat exchanger on a stage 1 car. 20 degrees colder can equal a bit of power so in this case I’ll consider not losing speed a gain, though technically it did trap ever so slightly higher today. 🤣

With the heavier wheels I don’t believe I would have done as well today.
