    B9 S4 exhaust drone

    Hey all,

I got my S4 not too long ago and it has full resonator delete (3) and the valves in the rear unplugged. I'm planning on going catless in the near future for stage 2, but knowing that what could I do to eleminate the drone without purchasing a complete new system, but still enjoy the drive with the valves open. Currently there is drone till 3,000 rpms, afterwards it pleasant to drive and have 0 complaints, but under that, it's not enjoyable.

    Any suggestions would be helpfulIMG_20220212_082135.jpg

I had the 034 x pipe and drone was bad as well in the 2500-3000 rpm range. Since my driving was in that range 75% of the time I decided to put the resonator back in. My valves are also unplugged.

I was disappointed since I waited months for it.

I have heard people leave the middle section and remove the front resonators with the VPS kit with no complaints.

There was someone that was installing the MBRP exhaust which I was very interested in the feedback with that one.

I have the stock DP still but no resonators and the AWE Touring catback, zero drone at all in my car.

You're asking to defy physics @ eliminate/no drone. To have the LEAST amount of drone then you need to keep the resonators and you can do a muffler delete. But you're talking about essentially going straight pipe but not wanting drone.. That's not realistic on any platform.

You can eliminate the resonators and not have drone, it all comes down to which mufflers you use. Granted on the B9 platform the stock catalyst acts as a muffler along with the turbo, the deletion of the resonators doesnt ensure drone. I have a non-resonated AWE system and it has zero drone.

That's not the way vibration and frequencies in metal works..

The closer you are to the source of the vibration or movement, the stronger the vibration or "drone" in this case will be. Changing the diameter, material, internal coating etc, all change those vibrations of the exhaust so comparing the stock exhaust to an aftermarket exhaust is not comparable for what the OP is trying to accomplish but okay..

Put the middle resonator back in and you'll eliminate the drone with a HFC. Catless may bring back some drone, but it's mixed opinions on that.

I’m running a catted downpipe and the VPS front resonator deletes and it seems perfect to me. Barely any drone and driving on the highway is still quiet in the cabin. I previously had the x pipe to remove the middle resonator and ended up putting it back in. I couldn’t stand the drone from 2-3k rpm’s. I’ve gotten a few compliments on the exhaust sound as well.

With just a resonator delete I got a lot of drone around 3k rpm. After I deleted the two front tiny resonators and installed just two awe mufflers I was able to get rid of the drone!
