Here is my experience. Bought a '13 RS5 in great condition but with a seized engine. Bought an Ebay 26k mile (Carfax verified mileage) engine. Installed and it failed (Rod bearing) within 300mi. Car had been wrecked 2yrs earlier on the East Coast and the Ebay seller/Dismantler I bought if from was in Sacramento, CA. Internals and oil analysis looks like the engine was stored poorly and got moisture/water in it over the 2yr period it sat. So this time around I bought a whole wrecked, but running car. 27k miles and had is shipped from a Copart auction in Ohio to one close to me. I was able to start it and drive it right up on my trailer. Sent an oil analysis off right away to Blackstone as an extra check and it came back with flying colors. Now it is ready to go into my car.
I'd suggest for you to check Copart and IAAI insurance auctions and consider getting a whole car if you have room. Ebay engines for from $8k to $12k, I paid $11k for the car and now I have spare parts and parts to sell like a good transmission with 27k than I can probably get $2500 for plus other parts to recoup much of my costs. Good luck.

BTW, what happened to the engine from your car?

Are engine rebuild/overhaul more expensive than a used engine at 11k-13k
I had a b8 s5 v8 4.2L I know it’s the not the same as rs5, but I did hear the cylinder block for all th 4.2l are same but the cylinder heads are the difference

    Sidhu
Question for you, if it’s just rod bearing/ how much more would a engine overhaul be ? With new timing Chain tensioners, rod/main bearings, new. piston rings ?
    I’m asking out of curiosity.
I thought that would be cheaper than whole engine replaced.

RS5 Engine block is diffferent from the S5 Block, they share almost no parts. RS5 engine block was developed from the Audi/Lamborghini V10 block but basically cutting off two cylinders. They share pistons, rods, main & rod bearings and bolts. I contacted a lot of Audi places and couldn't find anyone interested in N. America of rebuilding a RS5 Block. There are many places in Europe that do but then they had the same engine in both the RS4 & RS5 starting back in 2010 to 2015 so a lot more engines over in Europe.

Its more of a gamble to rebuild engine. They wont know the exact issue thats causing the seizure til they pull the engine out and take it apart. At that point damage could be minor or major. Its big question mark. I think find a motor with low km is the best bet.

(This one apparently ships from Germany, not sure about compatibility )

boneyxy, that first motor has over 107k miles on it already. $11k (incl shipping) is a lot to pay for a motor with that many miles. At least the second one has 89k Kilos/55k miles, but the remarks do say "Does not ship to the United States", Canada may be a different factor. I did let Sidhu know that I was able to buy a running and driveable but wrecked 27k mile car for $11.5k U.S. And now I have a lot of RS5 parts for spare and to sell to recoup some of my costs. Not practical necessary for everyone as I have a lift in my shop and live on acreage and do all my own work.

26k, says starts. Might want to keep an eye on it. Have it shipped to your mechanic, take any parts you want as spares, sell the rest or the car as a whole. https://www.iaai.com/VehicleDetail/33264296~US
    42k miles runs & drives https://www.copart.com/lot/57987411/...rs5-mi-detroit
Whereabouts in Canada? I'm picking Northern Tier lower mileage cars so shipping will be less but East, Central or West Coast?

It's been performing really well here, winter was great, but now I'm right in the middle of an apparent catastrophic internal steering rack failure at 56k miles. So, just as we're finally getting the weather for fast (ish) convertibles, it's laid up in the garage. We'll see how it plays out!

Sorry to hear about your Steering rack. 7.2hrs to swap it out seems to be pretty high. I'm no Audi dealer and I can probably do it in 3~4 at the most. I believe most any A4, S4, A5, S5, steering rack from a B8.5 should work as long as if you have Dynamic Steering it needs to be a Dynamic rack and if you don't get a non-Dynamic rack.

Haha brother, you know if somehow I came up with the scratch for that RS5 I'd just drive that instead! Looks to be in way better shape than mine. I ebayed a water damaged rack for $425, super fingers crossed that it works. Seems iffy but pretty much everything I do is.

Another option overseas, rebuilt. With the Euro and dollar almost equal, it's not a bad price for a fully refurbished engine.

He ended up purchasing a used engine and had it installed and running, just working out a few other bugs but sounds like it's sucessful and back on the road.
