How to open/close the exhaust valves? (2014 S7)

Several months back I upgraded my exhaust to the APR catback (with mid-muffler delete). Everything was working well, but now one of the valves stays closed. I tried putting the car in "comfort" mode, but neither valve moves (the other one is open). There is a constant rattling noise when the car is on, and it's very noticeable in parking garages. I took the actuator off, and the valve works fine - it seems that the actuator is always in the closed position. I contacted APR, and they shipped me a new muffler section, thinking the valve itself is malfunctioning (I don't think its the valve mechanism itself that is broken).

Any ideas on how I can test the actuator opening/closing? A new actuator goes for $187 - if the actuator is faulty, I'm thinking about having a muffler shop just weld it open. Thoughts?

Someone recently posted about a faulty spring within the exhaust valve controller. You can replace just the spring itself apparently.

If you are switching modes, between sport and comfort, and it’s not closing or opening, than it’s very likely a faulty valve controller
