Fault code 00473 after rear brake job

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking for some help on things to troubleshoot after doing a rear brake job as I don’t have much time these days with a kid. Did my rear brakes last weekend following rosstech’s youtube video on using VCDS to do the rear brakes. Drove to work two days last week and discovered on Wednesday that both rear brakes were hot and you could smell them so it appears that the pads are dragging. After getting home later in the day I did a quick run through with VCDS to open the e brake and close them again to see if something went wrong the first time but it didn’t help. Over the weekend I pulled the calipers, checked everything over and ran through the sequence again opening/ closing the ebtake and compressing the piston again. Double checked that the calipers were moving freely on the slider pins (cleaned and regressed during initial brake job) and everything is good there. There were no fault codes on the parking brake module either time, but when running through it again on Saturday I noticed the ABS module had code 00473. Researching the code online has lead to quite a few threads with this issue but no real fix other than one guy saying he needed to replace the wiring to both EPB motors. Everything g seems to work fine, car gives no warning like the EPB is on while driving, EPB functions properly, but rotors and pads are still getting very hot during driving. Anybody ever dealt with this code and what was the fix?

Post the actual complete DTC from VCDS. Maybe people remember what an 00473 is, maybe they don't. Plus 00473 is a component identifier, not the actual fault subcode, which should be in the DTC.

If you had it in the air, I'd say spin the tire and see if it goes around a few times after you let go. My rears will go around a few times, while my fronts might make it one time around.

Can't think of anything offhand that would be a common problem after doing the rears correctly (ie, using tool to release/engage EPB motors).

I'm just going to throw some thoughts out there, I'm no expert. If the parking brake works, it must be communicating fine. If there is an issue, it could be corrosion on the connectors or maybe a bent pin if you disconnected the plugs. I've also been told that doing this procedure without a battery tender can cause damage to the module. Its very sensitive to having correct voltage. Maybe the pads are defective or incorrect? This just doesn't sound like an electrical or mechanical problem.

Ill post a pic of it or the scan itself after work but there was nothing more than fault code 00473 in there (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00473)

never touched the electrical connectors, audi manual says states specifically not to disconnect them during pad and rotor replacement. car was also hooked up to a battery charger the whole time during any work.

Please no pics of logs. Just copy/paste the log text full here. You can wrap it in code tags if you want.

sorry, wrote this at 5:30am while getting ready for work. i did new pads and rotors and that's it. i usually don't bed rear pads for a daily driver unless i did front and rears at the same time.

here is the full scan of the car:

There's no fault code for the J540. Clear DTCs again and see if anything comes back. The ABS module is odd sometimes when clearing DTCs; you have to do it two or three times to make it realize there's no more issues.

But do that, don't touch the epb for a few days, scan again, see if something comes back on its own. If not, then activate and release the epb and scan for codes before turning engine off. Some things go away when you engine off. So scan live. If it's clean at that point, and it should be, there you go. If not, then come back with that new scan.

I’m aware of that and had been trying with no luck. Well, if I didn’t have much of a problem on my hands before I certainly do now. After I posted that scan I was looking through the ABS and parking brake module and I accidentally clicked into basic settings. I was in a rush cause I had to get my son up from his nap and feed him. Since you can’t back out from the “put battery on charger” warning I just hit ok thinking I’m not doing anything and just going to hit “done,go back” once I get in. Well, that seemed to be enough to piss it off cause now I have a parking brake malfunction flashing on the dash and codes in the brake module. Probably need a new module now. Anyone know if that module has CP on it or can I easily swap a new one in myself? Charging the battery now and hoping I can somehow reverse these codes by clearing them and getting the battery fully charged but it’s highly unlikely. That still doesn’t take care of the original code in the ABS module though. Still looking for input on that.

Yeah, people have picked up a used one and swapped it in easy enough. It sits in the front of the right rear cargo hold, behind the right cover. The black box with EPB in the letters on it.

Well if there’s no CP then that’s great, 1 min fix once I have a new one in hand. Time to find a local part out I guess. Posted in the Ross tech forums as well to see if there’s any way to salvage this one.
