    Metal shavings in oil filter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anybody experienced having any small shavings in your oil filters yet? Just had my brother do an oil change and this is unfortunately what we found.

    2019 S4, 54k miles, stage 1 034 Motorsports tune, been on E85 for maybe a total of 3-4K miles.

Not really sure what I should do at this point, any advice would be great!!

    Thanks guys

And now I’m feeling stupid because it won’t let me select a video to upload to show the filter. It’s in my gallery but not as an option to upload.

    Can anybody school me?

Theres been a number of cars with these engine failing due to metal in the oil filter, wether modified or not. My guess would be to flush and see what happens. However being that the car is chipped Audi will not play ball or entertain any sort of warranty on vehicles that have been modified.

Still have the oil or the filter?
Go to Blackstone Labs and order a Oil sample kit. I do these on any car I hop up or think there’s an issue.
As you could at least narrow it down a little.
    Good luck either way

This is good advice. The oil analysis should be able to tell you what metal the shavings are which may point to specific components (rings vs bearings vs casting debris for example). Otherwise if the car isn't using oil or having any other symptoms/sounds I'd just keep driving to the next oil change interval and see what turns up then.
    Good luck.

Depends on the size. Some is normal. If it starts to look like slivers, that is not good.

There is an old post that talks about it some.

Here’s the link to the video of the filter. Car is out of warranty by miles already so it’s more just a question of how bad the damage is.

I believe we still have the filter but not the oil, which we could easily just pull an oil sample. Looks pretty silver to me tho

    Thanks for the help guys.

That is sliver... not silver. Big difference.

Sorry to say, but to me that looks like an excessive amount. While not yet slivers, quite a few pieces look bigger than what I have seen from other B9 filters. Sorry, but I think you may have a bigger issue going on.

Oh boy..... have you had any issues with the motor? Has it given you indications of an issue?

That is excessive. Unfortunately you’ll have to tear into it to find the source. Have you checked the combustion chambers through the plug holes?

Like said above, I would send an oil sample into blackstone. Out of curiosity, what oil weight have you been using?

Is this any cause for concern? My friend who’s a mechanic said not to worry and it’s normal engine wear.

Oil was completely clear and had no glitter in it.

Hard to know for sure without cutting it open. But from what we can see, that looks pretty normal on these engines.

    Im switching to 5w-30.

My car is stage 2 and I do push it. I read 0w-20 breaks down at higher temps so I want the most lubricant and protection

I guess I am pretty ignorant to oil.. what math are you doing to come to the conclusion that 5W-30 will be safer/better for your engine?

You'd really need to lab test the oil to see if yours is breaking down. The factory fill Castrol is a very high quality oil. It may not stretch to 10,000 miles if beating on it hard, but without a lab test you really don't know. You can extract some and send off a sample or just capture some at an oil change and see how it did. It's a fairly cheap test, I prefer using these guys: https://www.oaitesting.com/

On the Facebook B9 S RS group, many people who track their cars and drive it hard are using 5w-30. Posts over there say the 0w-20 is pretty much just for emissions and mpg.

My mechanic friend also uses 5w-30 instead of 0w-20 on his household’s Q50s. Says 0w-20 is basically like water. His sentiment seems to match those from the FB group.

My thought process, like some others, is that the thicker oil provides a better barrier in between components. I’m still researching what others are doing, but so far it looks like those who drive their cars hard and are tuned prefer 5w-30 oil.

I'm sure he's being hyperbolic, it's not like you're comparing it to a 15w50 or something.

The difference is pretty small, either will work fine. If you use two identical oil formulations the 5w-30 may have a small benefit in the heat and a small loss of protection in the cold. The quality/formulation of the oil really matter more than such a small viscosity difference. A lower quality oil can shear and fail a lot faster causing it to thin out rapidly even if it's a higher viscosity to begin with. So while you might start with a 5w-30 it could rapidly become thinner than a 0w-20. This is where the lab testing comes in. It can tell you what your oil performance is like once it's been used.
