Recommended transmission fluid for 5 speed?

Was wondering if anybody has any current recommendations for fluid to use in a 5 speed b5, been searching around for a minute and can’t quite pinpoint what viscosity or fluid most people seem to run.

VW/Audi OEM Manual Transmission fluid (Febi branded oem fluid is cheaper) or Motul MT fluid is best for transmission longevity.

After doing a bunch of research a while back and getting confused about Redline options, I decided to run Amsoil Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube. It's 75-90 GL-4 and made a significant improvement over whatever cheap off the shelf stuff I put in when I first got the car. My local NAPA carries Amsoil, and got it for me at a surprisingly competitive price.

Fuchs Titan Sintofluid. I put Redline in mine and it’s difficult to shift in to first when cold. I’ll be trying this next.

^x2 on the Fuchs Titan. You want the "Sintofluid 75w80" which bears markings as a replacement for the OEM quattro gear oil "G-052-911".

Of note, you cannot (should not) just use any "manual transmission" rated gear oil that is available, like "Pennzoil Syncromesh" or other such things. This is because you are not putting this oil into a transmission, rather a "transaxle". Your transmission includes a differential. In fact, it includes *two* differentials if it's a quattro. The compartments are not separate, so the gear oil has to be fairly "special" to fit the needs of both diffs as well as the shifty bits. And the diffs are not altogether easy to please. They are both relatively high-friction items. The front diff is a hypoid type (this, along with the "shaft within a shaft" is the magic that makes the entire quattro AWD design actually fit in the transmission housing), and the center diff is a torsen. A typical Honda, Toyota or VW's FWD 5-speed box has neither of these types of high-friction diffs in them. That's why they can use basically water and get away with it. We cannot.
^Don't listen to this guy, he's not even a mechanic.

I tried searching for Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75W80 but all that shows up is Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE 75W90 (which I think is for FWD from what i've read in another thread mentioned by walky) and Fuchs Titan Sintopoid 75W90 is for the differential so I gave up looking for it and just ordered Genuine G-052-911 from ECS, hoping I get exactly what I ordered not a bait and switch.

walky_talky: Ok, so you bring up a really good point which has ended up in myself and a friend getting thoroughly confused when we dug into the GL-4 vs. GL-5 argument...

The big case for GL-5 always seems to be that it's intended for hypoid gears, where GL-4 doesn't have the right additives to support. Another point comes up that GL-5 has the potential to damage yellow metals, and shouldn't be used in transmissions which in most cases have brass synchros...

My dilemma was that if you look at a diagram of the quattro trans, the pinion on the front differential certainly looks like it's a hypoid gear, right? Or, is the key factor of it being hypoid if the input shaft is contacting it at a fairly offset position from centerline? If that's the case, then the shaft connecting to the front differential's pinion does contact almost on the centerline.

Either way, I settled on GL-4 in the trans, and GL-5 in the rear differential...

I think what I’m going for is redline 75W80 MTL, have redline mt90 in my o1e a6, and fcp stocks it so figured why not. Also going for a GL-5 Liquimolly gear oil for the diff.

So, aside from stock power levels, if I'm looking to make high HP what should I use for my quattro 5-speed?

I currently have my mind set on Motul 300

I’ve been using redline 75w90 GL4 for the past 60,000 miles in mine and haven’t had a single problem

Good to hear! Like I said above, that’s exactly what I ended up going with for my car.

I'm using Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. Made winter much more bearable, and made 2nd gear usable in the cold. (Before it was difficult to use 2nd in the cold, and in general)
The original syncro is still holding up, although my original gear oil still looked good, golden (not burnt) in color.

I used the Fuchs Titan as well in all of my manuals. I did get some OE fluid cheap once so went that route.
