    EA888 What's the Weak Point?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm new to the VW/Audi world and looking to turn up the power on my new S3. I probably would've shelled out for a RS3 but they decided not to bring the 2022 model to Canada. I guess that leaves $$$ to make this S3 into my own creation. I know this topic has probably been beat to death across many threads but I'm curious if there's any internal work needed to make 400-450whp reliably?

What's usually the first point of failure? Rods? I'd rather open the motor and beef it up a bit before putting a hole in the block. If the consensus is that these power levels are relatively safe with a good tune I'll probably just move forward. I'm a bit limited since 91 octane is the best fuel we can get locally. I'm intrigued by the new APR bolt on turbo kit but would like to see a few real world results first. Anyone here have one on an 8Y yet?

I appreciate any insight on this from those who learned the hard way.

Whats the weak point??? Everything is the weak point in these engines. But normally rods and pistons and hardware.

stock rods are good for 400-450 WTQ, and the water pumps leak. otherwise nothing glaring, be sure to keep up on the maintenance for the dsg and haldex and definitely get a TCU tune when modding.

Thanks Folks, If I decide to put rods and pistons in it what are most people using? I always had Manley internals with ARP hardware in my Subaru's. Additionally, is there an aftermarket water pump available?

The water pump has been revised a handful of times. No aftermarket one that I know off. Plastic housing with metal impeller. If you need to replace be sure to get the latest revised part number.

    You're not wrong MikTip

After talking to a few folks I'm going to start with this kit https://www.bar-tek-tuning.com/pisto...e-2-0-l-ea888- to bullet proof the motor for my plans.

Thanks for the IE link MikTip. I'm going to dig into this today and get some parts ordered. With my luck everything I want will be backordered and arrive in 2023 either way.

    EA888 What's the Weak Point?

I’ve been through many at this point. Unless your planing on making over 500 hp, oil changes and normal maintenance is all that’s needed.

I’ve replaced 3 engines over the last six months. All of them had piston skirts come apart. I’m blaming it on 10k oil change intervals. Most normal people will always go over the interval. So with a 10k, that really means 12 to 15k. The bottom of the pistons are lubricated with oil Jets, in every case the piston with a failure had a clogged jet. These blocks are considered throw away by VAG, no stock wrist pin sized overbore pistons available. So unless you’re doing performance pistons and rods, it’s new engine time.

So maintenance maintenance maintenance. When properly maintained the long block is bulletproof.

Are you seeing these failures on daily drivers or track machines? I'll be doing 5000km oils changes regardless, it's cheap insurance and peace of mind. It also gives me a reason to have a cold pint while the oil drains. No plans for more than 500hp right now but you know how that works.

All of the engine I’ve had apart are from 35-70k mileage daily drivers. Most enthusiast drivers don’t stick to the 10K oil change recommendations.

I have a 3.2 so don’t know what a weak point is. Bullet proof engine. Dsg and haldex every 50 k and oil every 10k. No launches

All the parts are going to be here next week to build the bottom end. Thanks for the IE link @MikTip, those guys really know their stuff. Are there any special tools required to pull the motor @Tjtalan? I'm thinking of doing it myself and then having my local shop do the internal work. I have access to a lift and tools, just wondering if there's anything VW/Audi specific. I haven't wrenched on one of these before, thought it would be a good way of getting to know the car better.

Only thing out of the ordinary is a set of triple squares. Drop the engine and trans out the bottom, then all the tedious stuff happens with room.

All of my hard engine parts and tuning are from IE, great company!

^ Anyone know if IE still sells short blocks or long blocks? I was gonna order a cylinder head and can't seen to find that option anymore.
