Red face Review of 034 Motorsports ECU/TCU Stage 1 E85 Tune + Customer Service Experience

    Hey everyone,

New member here, but I thought I would share my opinion on the 034 motorsport ECU and TCU tuning products for my 2018 TTRS. New to the Audi scene but have been loving it so far.

I am a SoCal member and lurker of the forums showing a heavy favor for Unitronic for tuning/hardware. While I do plan on trying their hardware, I ended up going with 034's tune because they were "local" and the price/performance ratio was enticing.

From the start I had great interactions with Justin C. for questions on parts and ordering. I recommend anyone interested reach out to him. I ended up getting their Stage 1 ECU and TCU to run a 91 octane file on my barebones '18 TTRS (other than an 034 intake that came from the car's previous owner). Candidly, the software interface is not anything special, but it is simple and easy to interact with. It has the interactivity of a nice google form (which can be good for ease of use but obviously is not a power user software--though that is to be assumed as these are OTS tunes).

Flashing was relatively quick and the hardware tuning box + cord is of nice quality with its own carrying case to keep in the car.

Throttle response and driving dynamics were instantly improved. Much more linear power band out of the whole rev range and the shifts are quick/cleaner. Not to mention, the ability to rev out in neutral or park makes the child in me way too excited (sorry for being the guy revving in a parking garage )

Of course, this was not without its difficulties.
My initial at home flash failed without clear reasons as to why. However, a second attempt solved the issue and flashed the 91 file no problem.

My second overall flashing attempt was going to their Stage 1 E85 file (which is not something offered from other tuners at a stage 1 level from my understanding). And yes I am aware this is a lot of power to run on stock internals, however, it is a nice tune to have until I ultimately go Stage 2. After setting aside time to flash the car, I grabbed my local E85 and set up my garage with a 15A battery charger and got to work. Unfortunately, it failed. No reasons as to why. Attempted again no luck. Flashed to stock and reattempted still no luck. Clearly this was frustrating when spending $XXXX on a tune. Plus my car was technically "inoperable" due to the E85 in my tank -- no sporty driving without the e85 flash/draining my tank.

I reached out to 034 via email as their phones are off due to covid/overflow (which is frustrating in its own right but I digress). I was assisted by Eric L. within 24 hours and we were in constant email contact over a 72 hour period in which his team worked out the issue and reuploaded a new Stage 1 E85 file to their servers for me to flash. While it would have been nice if it worked from the start, 034 Motorsports support team worked quickly to solve my problem. And on that metric they deserve an A. All that matters is that a company backs their product when things go wrong and not when they go right.

Now I am running E85 stage 1 and wow. It is a fun time! Definitely a lot of power and you can tell the stock internals are flexing their muscle to maintain but happy to have it as an option.

TL;DR Justin and Eric and also Alex R. (another contact point) have provided me with endless support and made sure all products were delivered as promised and operating at a high quality. If anyone has any questions feel free to DM for more specifics.

    Best,
    Cojo

Appreciate your review. I ordered their Stage1 93 & TCU tune over the winter and have yet to install it. (Factory warranty expires in the next few months). I know Uni seems to be the most popular, but I just wanted a reliable OEM + tune that holds up to HPDE events with my OEM hardware. Plus the Black Friday pricing was hard to beat.

Thanks for the heads up on the flashing software glitches. If mine fails on the initial flash I'll now know to re-run it.

Thanks for the review. I had the stage 2+ tune on my old mk2 TT RS from 034 and it was awesome, car drove like a dream. I am waiting a bit before I tune my mk3 now but will probably be going 034 again since I've always had a good experience with them. I think the only thing that would sway me to another vendor is getting something that can allow for a flex fuel setup but definitely not a deal breaker either just yet.

Sure thing! The Stage 1 tune on basically stock internals is a huge difference. Especially with the TCU changes.

Definitely do the tuning in a stress-free environment. Not that it is per se difficult but the thought of it not flashing and bricking the ECU is stressful. After the initial failed attempt, I simply re-ran the software and had no issues. My best (uneducated guess) was that it did not like whatever the prior owner may have done to the ECU? As it seems they may have tuned it at sometime before flashing it back to stock. Regardless, their support team should help out quickly (note they use a separate "tuning" email for such support). Enjoy the summer months!

I think DSI may have a flex fuel file? I am lucky that the 034 file is tuned for E85 summer/winter blends which technically allows for "E60-E85" and California has a TON of e85 pumps compared to other states. Though it would be nice to simply fill it with 91 on a road trip with a truly flex fuel tune and not having to go to the garage + wifi to re-flash.

Yeah it seems like DS1 has a good flex fuel setup but I don't even have many stations around me that have E85 so not sure if it's worth if for me to go that route anyway. I think someone who already knows they want to go flex fuel may be better looking into other options but I think something like stage 1 or 2 from 034 would probably do well for me out of the box for a while.

Any thoughts specifically on their TCU tune?

to be candid, I did the ecu and tcu together so it is hard to separate exactly how tcu affects the shifts and driving. but I think the most noticeable transmission related aspects would be the shift speed and the lack of rev hang I noticed in the stock transmission. Especially in comfort mode. I felt the stock Transmission was a bit sluggish and not smooth in comfort mode. after the flash, comfort mode is more comfortable/smooth and Dynamic mode is a lot more aggressive and rapid in its shifting and downshifts. e85 power definitely makes for some hard hitting shifts in dynamic mode.

Just a quick follow-up on this topic. I finally flashed the ECU/TCU (Stage 1 93). The flashing process worked flawlessly. Took less than ten minutes for each flash (ECU/TCU). One other major selling point I forgot to mention in my previous reply was the fact that you can use a VM Fusion Windows 10 image on a Macbook Pro. While looking at other offerings, none supported this method. So a plus for anyone who doesn't have a Windows Laptop.

Power delivery is very linear, just what I wanted for daily use & occasional Road Course HPDEs. To be honest the TCU tune I found makes the most difference. I drive in manual 95% of the time, shifts are crisp and no longer hagging while driving slowly around town or giving it the beans. Previously the transmission was reminiscent of a CVT, slipping during acceleration.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with this tune.

DS1 can flash, log and realtime tune from anything with a modern browser including Mac, tablets, phones. We even flashed with a watch. ECU flash takes 4 minutes for full and 30 seconds to change calibration. You can turn the Mac off during the flash and it will still complete so wireless flashing is totally safe. 034 guys are cool, just wanted to mention this. We do not include TCU tuning though but we developed our ECU OTS tunes using an 034 TCU for stage 1/2.

I just flashed Stage 1 93 034 ECU + TCU. Not too impressed with the throttle response. It feels sluggish and pretty much stock to me but perhaps the shifts are better and I haven't noticed it yet.
