2019 S4 Prestige - Need a Drivers side acoustic front window

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So we just about had our 19 S4 finished up from my deer strike from 2 months ago. dropped the car off at the body shop for them to install the last couple of minor under hood plastic parts, wet sand the hood and polish it out to finish it off. The shop had their PDR guy out and said they were going to have a small minor door ding removed from the drivers side front door. Well it seems the PDR guy tried to use a wedge on the window to get room for the tool to get down into the door and shattered the window.

Now the bad, there are only 2 windows in the USA and Audi has a parts hold on them, dealership told me if we are lucky Audi might release one of them to us but it will take 2-3 weeks to get the authorization and get it shipped to the dealership. If not we will have to order one from Audi Germany and if that is the case it could take 2-3 months before we will see a window. I am trying to work with the shop on a vehicle in the mean time and just use our other vehicle if it is only the 2-3 week time frame, but if it turns into 2-3 months I am going to ask them to pay for a rental car so my wife and I will both have something to drive. The owner has offered up his personal truck, but it is a crew cab 4x4 diesel, with diesel being $5 per gallon here that isnt something we really want to entertain.

Does anyone know of any salvage yards that might have a OE 18-20 Audi A4/S4 that would have a good drivers side acoustic glass? Really would like to have this car back in our hands as soon as possible and not have to wait the 2-3 weeks at best case scenario that it may be before we get the car back.

The topping on the cake was the body guy was wet sanding the hood down and burnt thru the clear and the paint, so now they have to strip the hood and repaint it as well. We just cant seem to catch a break right now on this car. The only good from it is that I get to drive the new 2020 BMW X3M Competition we bought and the weather is perking up so I can get my Corvette out of the garage and drive it on occasion as well.

Thank you, I saw them but they are not the acoustic glass the S4 Prestige uses, it has a laminated film on the glass for sound control.

Hmm, I only have a premium plus, but do a lot of highway driving... Obviously due to what seems like a shortage this wouldnt be feasible now, but is it possible to replace the standard windows with the acoustic ones in non-prestige cars?

With enough money I am sure it is possible. Just as an example though, the front windows are $353 each from Audi. It would not be a cheap upgrade by any means.

You know funny you mention them, one of the worst experiences I've had recently was trying to call them yesterday. They wont let you speak with a human now, try to force you to set up the appt online and cant even tell you if they have the window in stock or what the cost is. They just want you to setup the appt, give them a credit card and then drop the vehicle off for a all day appt and pay what ever bill they present you with at the end.

I called a local guy, will have the window tomorrow, $340 installed and will have my car back in 1 day when I drop it off with him next week for a aftermarket window that has the laminated acoustic film on it.

That's interesting! I wonder if window tinting would affect it in some weird way.

It's just using the same kind of laminated dual glass pane construction as the windshield, instead of basic single pane tempered glass as normally used on door and rear windows. Heavier, thicker, shatter-proof (which is how the parts catalog marks it), so also less noise penetration.

It'll take more than a punch to break it should you go underwater, so make for the rear windows.

Funny thing is I never noticed the windows being any thicker than any other normal vehicles windows. The body shop said the PDR guy actually commented at how thin the glass seemed to be. It makes me wonder if I really do have the acoustic glass, but someone else told me that all 19 S4+ models and the Prestige models have the acoustic glass. I cant find my window sticker to verify this though.

It might not actually be thicker; that would impact other construction elements of the door, I guess. Seems it's the multi-layer construction that actually improves the noise reduction, not just making it multi-layer so it can be thicker/heavier.

It would be interesting to know the STC values for the standard and "acoustic" front side window options to see how they compare.

Well luckily I found a website that allowed me to put in my VIN and pull the original Moroney window sticker. Confirmed my hunch, the Prestige does have the "acoustic" glass option on the 2 front windows. So luckily that is what I ordered from the local glass shop. So hopefully by end of this next week car will be back in my hands, new tint on the front 2 windows and I can concentrate on getting the clear bra back on it and ceremaic coated so I can close out the insurance claim.

You can literally compare it with the rear. If you have the double pane, you'll know immediately. Roll both down a bit and compare.

Actually you cant, when rolled down the front laminate windows look the same as the rear windows. They are the same thickness as the rears.

Dropped the car off last week, shop never opened the new window. Upon opening the box the new window was broken on arrival. That vendor had no more windows either. Went with a local vendor that was 2 miles from my house, their distributor had 3 windows in stock. Took them 2hrs to change out the window for me. Body shop called and paid for the new window and I was on my. Then 2hrs later Audi called the body shop and told them the new OE window was at the dealership, after telling us we probably wouldnt get it. They offered no updates nor ETA's, so the body shop told the dealership sorry since we already had the new window installed in the car.

Car is now at the detailer's shop. He has fully polished the S4, other shop is installing PPF on hood, front nose and headlights and then re-tinting my front windows. Then goes back to the detailer to do the final prep and apply the ceramic coating. If all goes well I will swap the S4 out with our X3M and they will start the same process on it.

After almost 3 months I am almost finally done with getting cars repaired and coated.

Again, yes I do. I had the window in front of me. It has the code on the Audi logo for being laminated acoustic glass. The widow had a solid crack that went from the top of the window all the way down to the bottom of the window. it was not shattered like a normal tempered window would have shattered. The shop that replaced the window confirmed this as well, the OE window was laminated as was the replacement. Both the front and rear windows are the same thickness as well.

At this point you seem to want to argue and may not know what you are talking about in regards to the OE acoustic windows that Audi is using on the B9 Prestige models. It says right on my window sticker (Front acoustic glass), Audi parts verified this and the replacement window met this guideline as well.

I think we're talking about different points here. I said "double pane". You can literally see/feel the difference in the single vs double as one is double the thickness, and you can feel both panes with your finger.
If you swear that you have "laminated" glass, then it means Audi also makes a laminated single pane, which is what you have.
Here are some photos stolen from the interwebs.
It may have changed, but all prestige models used to have double pane glass. If what you say is true, it means they have since downgraded to single pane, which is good to know.

Look at the first item under the prestige package on my window sticker. Can you compare to yours and see if it changed?

Mine says the same as yours, but when the window is rolled down you dont see 2 layers of glass, the glass is fully sanded/polished just like how a normal tempered window is done. So yes either Audi change the specs or the glass is being made differently. I ran my nail across the crack in the glass, you could feel it on the outside of the glass and you could barely feel it on the inside, but that was due to the window tint film still being on the glass. Both the glass shop, the PDR guy and the body shop owner all said the same thing, for a layered/laminated glass it was one of the thinnest panes of glass they had ever seen. They were all surprised it was the same thickness as the rear windows.

Can't you guys just check the manufacturer label on the actual windows - my Audi one has the word Acoustic printed on it and I believe it's a legal requirement for that type of info to be permanently labelled on the glass panel. Use Google to search for all the different symbols/standards that are needed for automobile glass.

That has already been done on my car, my OE passenger window shows the acoustic laminated symbol. Also you cant miss laminated glass and how it functions when broke. I have broken my fair share of tempered glass over the years, laminated just cracks in a big long crack. Tempered glass no matter where it is hit shatters and folds into the vehicle. in my case the window could still roll up and down and was functional and even with a push it didnt try to buckle into itself.
