Oil consumption rebuild thread with parts lists

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My B8.5 2014 2.0T CPMB at 100K+ miles burns very little oil using a high ZDDP oil with a detergent package specialized to protect against soot. But we know by now that the ring design in all B8's is flawed. For fun I contacted an Audi dealer and built the following list using my VIN. This should serve as a roadmap for B8's need to do oil consumption rebuilds. Always buy parts based on your specific VIN but this list is a huge head start. I will revise/update this list in the future if updates are needed and be aware that parts may be superseded later.

That's a good list.... I'm sick right now but will double check it against mine when I feel better. .
Should be pointed out ( and you may have) some guides are different on earlier engines.

Hope you feel better, So many people are sick right now that I know (flu not COVID)..... agree guides are different on the earlier years. Folks should use this as a roadmap when they build their own list -- make sure you didn't miss ordering a head gasket, for example, when comparing to my list. But I also strongly recommend only buying parts from a dealer using your VIN, especially since now days with sites like AudiUSAparts selling at fixed margin over costs and they are one of the highest, if not the highest, volume outlets (they are a Porsche dealer too) in North America. Cool, let me know if you find stuff later and I will update to try to help people that have to go down the same path you have already been....

I wouldn't worry too much about the cam bridge (06H-103-144-K) you can reuse it. Take the screen that has broken off out of the hole to the head, rip the remaining screen out of the bridge, and reinstall.

Thanks for the input. Agree, that's why I listed the cam bridge as optional. Instead of ripping the rest of the screen off when I did my timing (found the ripped off screen just sitting there in the oil gallery) I opted to replace it with a new one because the -K has a beefed up screen and there are also other improvements that -K has a modified collar on the intake cam, etc.

Thanks for pulling this together! I’m a CPMB too and I fully expect to be pulling the engine for a rebuild soon. I’ve been sitting on parts for the timing job for 2 years. Smh. I might as well tackle pistons, rings, rods (I want to upgrade) at the same time.

Just curious if the piston kit you list has the updated rings that “solve” the consumption issue? Or do they just get clogged slower than the original ones?

Hey, yep, those new 06H-107-065-DM pistons from Audi will come with waffle rings, which solves the consumption issue.

    Nice work.

I believe the newer version of the cam bridge has an updated and more robust screen, so the previous issues of it falling out are likely now gone.

For curiosity (without starting an oil flaming war...) what oil are you using?

I have been running Driven DI40 since my CPO expired a few years ago. FCP Euro sells it under their lifetime free replacement... they call it "Porsche DI40" but it's not just for Porsches, it's for any direct injected engine. Protection against LSPI, soot formation, etc

just about got the motor out. and this is fantastic
2014 CPMB Sline A4 and huge oil consumption.. also Wastegate as tons of play so going to do the upgrades on that as well.

front end all apart, just need to get the tranny and exhaust separated tomorrow and she's coming out.

between you and iceman this will save me a shitload of time and its greatly appreciated..

No problem, I built that exactly to help people so I'm glad you can use it. How many miles on the 2014 when it started drinking oil? If you had the after run coolant recalls done and depending on your mileage you can get a free turbocharger from Audi if your loose wastegate is causing underboost (or might be able to get them to anyway even if not, friend was able to get them to give him one just showing it was cracked and pushing the dealer a little bit).

Let us know if we missed anything or if you find anything else useful to add over the course of your rebuild. Good luck with the job........

thanks Silver, I know the car has 280km on it now, and we did the oil consumption testing about 150-160k, also went through and got the extended turbo warranty unlimited miles when some of the recalls were done, I will have to look into that and speak with the dealer since its all apart and I def don't want to bring them the car.

Here is the full flow-chart for the after-run coolant pump:
    https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q5-...etter-3016775/

I had 19N4 done so the result is that my turbo will be under warranty until the end of 2023 (which is 62 months from the date I had the recall done).

Agree... best would be to go to the website and type in your VIN. This will tell you if you are eligible.

    https://www.coolantpumpsettlement.com/CheckVIN

For example when I type in my VIN it says:
    MATCH FOUND

This Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has been matched with an eligible Settlement Class Vehicle.

Not by default. I would inspect the bearings during the rebuild but if they are fine and don't have scoring they don't need to be replaced with the oil consumption rebuild.

Good lord I would replace them if they looked like that. wow. That bearing also tells a story about why your engine was burning oil before the rebuild......... it was not well lubricated

This^^, Audi’s 10k OCI’s can be to blame for their engine problems (especially consumption) dating back to the 1.8T B5/B6, they thought synthetic oil was the solution…and in part it was….it pushed the issues further beyond the warranty period.

At 5-6k oil analysis shows that at least LiquiMoly detergents and solids are low enough to be viable, doesn’t mean optimal for an engine prone to consumption, this includes the newer 3.0T CREC.

Agree. You have direct injection but many of the new cars are going turbocharged (like the 3.0 that switched from supercharged to turbocharged). This helps with gas mileage but the turbo cooks the oil at very high heat.

I suspect if icy was doing oil analysis all that wear to areas like the bearings would have for sure shown up in the oil analysis. I run a magnetic drain plug from LN engineering and a mag filter on my oil filter housing, which I cut open at each oil change. And my oil analysis shows no signs of wear. For example bearing wear will showup in your copper, tin, and lead measurements. My wear levels for these are basically 0.

Yeah no real analysis needed other than the " add oil" message lol...

There would have been all kinds of everything in the oil. Whole engine was worn out

ok great... at 135K+ miles I am going to assume mine look similar and put them on my order that I am about to place. Driver and passenger side electronic motor mounts for my Q5 costs in total not far from what the 4 pistons do LOL... ffffffff

I am also taking a page from your book and adding the rod bearings.... will update the part list when I finalize it. Knocking this out soon

mine were cheap to replace as its a manual and neither side were the active ones... i remember them being cheap.... functionally they were fine, but started turning to dust lol.

As far as the bearings go I have been building engines for a long time.. you NEVER take pistons and rods out and put them back with the same bearings.. so it was easy for me to order... glad i did ... ;)

Mine are $330 each at wholesale dealer discount.... there's really no end to all the stuff I can replace "while I am in there" but might as well kill it all in one shot and be done with it.

8R0-199-381-AK and 8R0-199-381-C are for my Q5, they are electronic motor mounts so possibly different than what you have on the A4 even though they are both still the 2.0T.

Ya crazy expensive. Agree but the place I am ordering it from will let me return them as long as they are unopened/unused. I just want to have everything on hand so I can knock it all out in one shot once it gets going... don't want to be down for a few days waiting for parts.

Why don't you just buy the Lemfoerder aftermarket? ~70 USD each.

Why do you want to pay 330 CAD each?

I am in the USA... I decided to roll with all dealer parts for the rebuild, yes I know I am crazy...... if mine happen to be in good shape I will return them and get the money back but I don't want to do this twice

Yea, Q5 motor mounts are expensive. I’m kind of curious how mine are. Please report back after the tear down…

Will do. Finalizing my list and ordering parts later this week or next. Will do the job on a weekend in the beginning of October and will follow up with what I find on the strip down. The place I order dealer parts from will let me return unused parts but not electronic parts. However with 135K miles on the engine it's probably safe to say the motor mounts should be replaced regardless.

How long were you running on the Driven oil? Just trying to gather more experiences. I'm surprised that with such a good oil, and the premium restore, that nothing helped.
