This would be for our turbo chargers facing failure due to the oil strainer.

According to numerous posts here they cut the change in midway through the production run. My understanding is not all 2018s have it.

    Per Audi:
February-April 2017: Technical Service Bulletin regarding turbocharger replacement, including
replacing the oil strainer, was issued to address engine performance and other quality issues on
vehicles in the field. On March 30, 2017 an optimized oil strainer with increased mesh size was
introduced in production as a result of the quality improvement processes. In addition, Audi issued
a parts-related special notice to remove obsolete oil strainer from parts inventory.

    Per Audi:

Subject: Chronology for Audi Recall 21H7

Volkswagen hereby submits the following chronology associated with the subject recall.

    Chronology of Defect
May 31, 2014: As part of regular field monitoring and quality assurance processes, analysis of
claimed field parts was started by Audi and the supplier of the turbocharger. The claims could not
be directly connected to the turbocharger as the root cause. Field monitoring continued.
August 2014 – January 2017: Investigation regarding root cause and failure resolution process
initiated based on additional turbo charger failures in the field. Start of the development and testing
of process for an optimized oil strainer including release procedure on test benches and by
endurance runs. At that point there was no indication that a turbo charger failure may cause an
engine stall while driving and the topic was handled as a regular quality topic. Analysis revealed
that, depending on the conditions in which the vehicle is used, deposits may accumulate in the
engine oil system and over time these may clog up the oil strainer, which could lead to an
insufficient supply of oil to the turbochargers. A new oil strainer with a larger mesh size was
developed for the oil supply for both turbochargers.
    Field monitoring continued.
July 18, 2019: Upon request of NHTSA, Audi AG presented the field situation, indicator types, and
field monitoring process to NHTSA. Analysis and monitoring of field cases worldwide did not
indicate a likelihood of stalling upon a turbo charger failure due to a clogged oil strainer.
May 13, 2020: Upon request of NHTSA, Audi AG presented the updated field situation.

    Field monitoring continued.
March 29, 2021: NHTSA ODI opened up investigation PE21-009.
April 2, 2021: NHTSA ODI sent an Information Request letter related to PE21-009.

The recall is on their site, as it showed up for mine. I am guessing you did the vehicle search by year/make/model. Maybe try using your VIN?

I did search by VIN. So I assume my car is a late enough 2017 build that I have the new screens. I hope that's the case!

Now the next questions for you all is how do they deal with those that have already failed and got charged a ton of money for the fix and how will tune / TD1 status impact the recall.

    START DATE

    DESCRIPTION

The oil strainer within the oil supply for the turbocharger might become blocked by oil/carbon deposits contained in the engine oil. A blocked oil strainer within the oil supply for the turbocharger leads to a lack of lubrication of the turbocharger bearings. This causes wear on the bearings and, as a result, the turbine wheel of the turbocharger may contact the housing, or the turbocharger shaft can break. This could lead to a lack of power or even stalling, which could increase the risk of a crash.

So went from extended warranty to recall that quick? Hopefully there will be an actionable repair and not just an fyi until a failure happens.

Saw this note as well https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...m-a1115980261/

Audi will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail starting on May 20, 2022
Mine is on the list so fingers crossed.

That would likely be covered under the extended warranty that just came out shortly before this recall.

Submit the expense form and hope and pray they approve it. Right now, seems like only those who went to the dealer, or from authorized repair shops who used OEM parts will be approved. Still waiting to see though

Just confirmed with my dealer too that it applies but just came out today so they don’t have all the details. Will have to call back in a couple of weeks to see if they know what to do.

    Thanks for the Heads up!

This is interesting, when the PODS was recalled all sport seat vehicles couldn't be sold until fixed. Audi stores might fall into this scenario where they won't be selling pre-owned 4.0T until a fix is done.

Yeah I think this would be a game changer. I wonder if dealerships would drive the sale price up some to cover this maintenance.

I would think there wont be maintenance costs, since the mother ship will cover all costs. Probably will change the market until the fix is outlined, than skyrocket the market soon after.

    Shocker ... not

When my turbo popped I sent the NHTSA all the photos of my oil screen and my turbo teardown. This failure point is clear and it was only a matter of time until Audi got their hand forced.

There are two things I am inferring from the recall letter:
    1) There are limited 2018 failures, so Audi was able to keep them off the list.
    2) The NHTSA is not convinced that the latest screen revision is the answer, hence the "Repair not yet available".

I suspect that Audi said the latest screen is the fix and the NHTSA said it is too early to tell. Now we wait until either the 2018's start to fail OR the 2018's hold out and that screen becomes the repair.

I personally don't think the latest screen is the answer.

I suspect the repair is likely going to end up being screen removal. And then the class action lawsuits will start. This isn't the first time Audi has done this dance...and they still suck at it.

I bought my S6 last year knowing the turbos were going to fail at some point, it's nice to know my 9 year old car still has some factory coverage

I personally don't think the latest screen is the answer.

I suspect the repair is likely going to end up being screen removal. And then the class action lawsuits will start. This isn't the first time Audi has done this dance...and they still suck at it.
Based on the letter, seems like the NHTSA has put some sort of timeline on Audi to figure out the solution (letters mailed in May). Doesn’t seem like enough time to figure out if 2018’s will be impacted, or the new screen fails/doesn’t fail.

I would think the official recall letter will have the remedy, but would be interesting to see if it will have the same verbiage “repair not yet available”

I like how they sugar coat it and only say that it may stall. Not that you run the risk of grenading the turbo and sending metal into the cylinders totally screwing an engine.

When a piston disintegrates due to turbocharger parts being force fed into it and the connecting rod wedges itself into the engine block. The engine will stall...... lol
