    Engine Oil Consumption

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I now know engine oil consumption is an old and well known issue. Any chance some folks have been down this road and have words of wisdom to share?

2014 Audi A6 2.0t fsi private party purchased in late 2021 with 135k miles. PCV replaced. 2 BG engine oil treatments. Still consuming 1 quart every 400-600 miles of Castro 0W-40. Would another brand or weight help? Any other treatments to free up piston oil control rings?

Loving our first Audi just really frustrated with oil consumption and not at all prepared to spend $5-6k to independent shop for a partial rebuild.

    Thank you!

Most of the 2.0 oil consumption problems were thought to be solved after the 2012 engines but I still hear about some 2014s with consumption problems. You might be able to get help from Audi on but probably not. If you are consuming 1 quart per 400 - 600 miles its time to pull the engine and replace the piston rings. With that mileage you might as well rebuild the engine while you are at it.

Might be time to top off the oil and trade it in. If the car looks good you will still get a good $$ on trade in and put that $5 - 6K towards a newer car.

Run some ATS chemical 505crf and 505cro to free the rings. Or AMS oil engine flush.

If you can change the oils yourself, try Pennzoil 5/40. We’ve got two Audis and the that oil that both make it 5-6k before top-off.

If that doesn’t help and you don’t want to jump into a rebuild, I’d suggest selling as others have note.

    THIS.

My wife drove a 2011 A4 2.0T (purchased new) and we went through the Audi oil consumption measurement protocol beginning around 75k (?) miles. Finally had the piston rings replaced under the warranty. That solved the oil consumption issue but then, shortly after, we ran into the PCV issue and, finally, a good amount of unidentifiable oil-leak issues. On the last $800 diagnostic & repair visit with a trusted indy shop, I told my wife that if that did not do the trick, we're getting rid of the car----I just couldn't stomach throwing more $$$ at it. Issues arose again within a week's time. About a month later we took it to Carmax. They offered a very decent number. I couldn't wait to unload the car and walk away with a check.

Exactly my thought. Try a thicker weight oil first - 5w40 that meets VW spec - see what that changes to consumption. Go from there if engine rebuild or selling is the next order of business

I’ve tried a few oils on 2.0 Audis. The Pennzoil lasts the longest l, TBN and wear metals are pretty good. Oil and filter at $50-60 on total. Maybe with the peace of mind before selling..

^ I personally use this and have since day 1 of ownership (5w40) and have never had an issue with oil consumption. I also don't have a 2.0t, which is widely known as having worse, engine internals related issues vs a bad pcv on the 4.0t causing the issue.

I would try either 5w40 mentioned and see if it helps.

I remember my old 3.0t used to consume 1 quart between oil changes and that was using motul 8100 but gen 1, when I switched to Gen 2 it did not consume a drop.

that isn't bad, a lot of German cars say this is normal. My 07 Audi A6 3.2 use to use about 1 qt. between changes and same with my 08 BMW 550i
