    2016 S6 won't start or crank

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

A mutual friend is encountering issues after his S6(2016 Prestige 59k miles) had been sitting for 2 months. He's considering just trading it into carmax. There are now some talks of me buying it instead of CarMax, if the price is right.

The car still won't crank over despite putting in a new(albeit, not OEM Audi) battery last week. When I press the ignition I can feel the starter jolt the engine a bit, but it mainly just lurches the engine for a millisecond then gives up.

It has a fault code "5456 - Starter will not turn - Jammed or Electrical Malfunction". Seems strange for a 59k mile car to have a bad starter. Is this a common issues or is it more likely that the engine has seized?

    Many thanks!

Did he clear the codes after replacing the battery?

Nope he didn't clear the codes, so was able to find a bunch from back in November/December. I'll post log shortly if you'd like the take a look. You guys are awesome.

Capture the old codes, then clear them out and try to start it again.

I was getting a bunch of misfire codes/running rough and parked it for a couple weeks until I had time to take it in to get looked at. Went to start the car and the battery had died. Replaced the battery and was still getting the same issues. My mechanic told me to clear the codes before driving it again. It drove fine and never had the misfires again. Battery failures can cause some odd things on these cars.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely try clearing out the codes and starting her up.

Here are the logs. I deleted a bunch of the filler lines to try to keep it small.

Haha yeah looking at those posts now through Tapatalk is impossible. My phone started to steam. I'll trim that list down to the important stuff

    EDIT: Trimmed log down

Save them all to a file, clear all the errors. Double check the battery. Then try and start again. Then rescan for codes. You have a ton of electrical related signal codes, many of which can be caused by low/bad battery.

Seems like a wiring/connection issue to me. Make sure the battery terminals are tight.

Assuming so, then I would look at grounds. Trace the battery ground and make sure that connection is tight. Then, based on the codes, I would check the ground for the ECU. That is ground 645. If you see any corrosion on a ground point, clean it up.

OEM does not matter, correct size does. Should be H7, H8 or H9. Eventually should be recoded by VCDS or equivalent to extend battery life, but that shouldn't be causing the immediate problem. Sitting two months in a garage or out in sub-zero cold?

I had a bunch of those codes when I had a blown fuse in the engine compartment fuse box (underneath the ECU). It all stemmed from a cut wire that grounded out. My AC compressor shaft had broken off from the transmission and was spinning around eventually cutting a wire to a sensor in that area blowing a very important fuse in the fuse box. Every time I tried replacing the fuse it would blow whenever I turned the ignition on which was my first indicator of an electrical issue. It would appear that most of your codes listed are electrical related so I would start looking at fuses in the engine bay compartment. T30 is also located in the engine bay, but it is underneath the hood cowl and strut brace, worth checking this area too. Post back your findings and let us know what you find, if anything.
