    Differences between A6 and A7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did try searching to see if the question was ever posted before, but found nothing. I will be in the market soon to update/upgrade from my B6 USP and leaning on the larger platform of the C7 due to the great reputation of the 3.0 and Auto trans over the B8S4 with it's DSG. My question is: What are, or are there differences in options (functional or aesthetic),running gear, etc between the C7A6 and the C7A7 beyond the obvious rear seats, hatch and appearance? Does the A7 possess any higher quality interior bits or tech than the A6?

To the best of my knowledge there aren't any hardware differences between the 2, it's just the hatch vs sedan.

    Differences between A6 and A7

Practically the same. A7 has a slight less amount of headroom in the back seat as the rear sweeps down.

The only functional thing I can think of is that the A7 (with appropriate options) gets a corner-view camera system, whereas the A6 gets a proper surround view/overhead system. That should tell you exactly how small the differences are- the A7 is a smidge heavier, IIRC A7 runs tires 10mm wider for a given wheel size, and the door card design is slightly different.

The A6 and A7 are extremely alike. I liked the A7 because it had more storage space and IMHO looks way better. However, the A7 was priced so much higher that for an equivalent price you could get a newer A6 with less miles, which is what I ended up doing.

I'm not sure if this is true with the a models or not but the 7's i thought had the option for the back seats having two or three seats?

They’re pretty much the same as long as you compare trim models correctly. Obviously a prestige 7 will have more bells and whistles than a premium 6.

I went with the 7 because it looks so much better IMO. The engines are the same, the trans are the same, the tune options are the same, everything that matters mechanically is the same. Whatever aesthetically pleases you will be your best option.

    A6 v A7

I've owned maybe 20 or so Audis since the early eighties. After 3 sequential D2 S8, I bought a 17 A7 with Competition package. Couldn't be happier. The hatch comes in handy, looks beautiful and the Comp package gives you the S Recaro (type?) seats, sport differential, and a bunch of other goodies.

Have had a S6, RS7 and A6 TDI all facelift. Some of this is mentioned already.

Aside from the obvious 4 door hatch to traditional sedan, the starting pricing was around 10k difference which carries over to pre-owned prices. Won't mention rear headroom since you can read up on it, taller passengers in the back can be really close to the ceiling.

Body panels are all different. Underpinnings mostly the same, minor things like the rear trailing brace thing on the 7s the 6s don't have. I don't think the 7 came in 2.0 in the US?

    Headlights
From loose observation, the 7s usually come with the higher tier headlights vs. several variations on the 6 (especially on facelift).

    Taillights
No physical shape change between early and later models, 6 the shape and color are changed and not easily interchangeable.
7s have reported some dead leds on the upper brake light.

    Doors
7s are frameless windows so glass dip on entry and exit.
7s weather stripping gets ugly over time, no leakage but ugly.
6 and 7 door cards and interior grabs are very different, switching between my 6 and 7 I miss the front window switches from muscle memory, 7 being further forward for front windows.

    Dashboard
Not interchangeable, trim is different with the 7 having an upper trim piece matching the rest of the trim.

    Center console
Length is different between them, 7 being slightly longer. Only noticed this because I have had both right next to each other.

    Audio
All 7s have a sub in the tire well, 6s are generally on the rear deck

    Options
Top view is not an option on the 7, mirrors are on the door shell not the triangle on the upper beltline.
7 hatch is always powered, 6 power trunk is an option.

S7 and RS7 are 4 seaters, I imagine the A7 competition interior is 4 seaters too but A7 in general is 5 seats and uses similar back seat hardware to the Avants.

Not really wider track when the half shafts are the same across the models, the body panel/wheel openings allow for lower offset by a little bit nothing big in the grand scheme but makes a difference to end users with offset options.

My bad, guess all the A7s I've seen are regular bench in the back. I thought the RS7 with comfort seats came with 3 in the back til I saw one.

i love both the A6 & A7 but bought A6 due to a 5kish difference for same car basically. i do prefer the A7 look on outside smidge more but for the up charge didn't think it was worth it, plus the rear seat (not that i really have 5 in car often) makes the middle seat not comfy

Thank You for the input guys, it really helps. I understood the differences in doors and trim due to the dimensional differences, but I thought there might be some slight trim quality variation between them due to the 7 being the "flagship" of the platform(such as nicer materials, etc), but I guess that doesn't come into play until you look to the Competition model A7 or move up to a S7 or RS7. I really do like the styling of the 7 as it takes some of the "big sedan" look away. I also think the hatch might serve me better as loading/unloading a hockey bag( it had to get squished in through the small trunk opening of the B6). I really don't drive many miles a week/year due to my close proximity to my work(once nicer weather comes I'm either walking or biking in),but when I do drive it's at least an hour each way on the highway. So while I do love my B6 for being nimble in it's handling, I really can appreciate the long legs and quiet cruising of the C7. I also want to modernize to something my phone can link to and some more modern touches.

If you drop the back seats and remove the package shelf then there is a fuckton of room in the back end of a 7. That is a bumper cover and wheel liner for a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I had to adjust the passenger seat a bit but it fit.

It doesn't come into play at all- the competition trim/model was also offered on the A6, with identical content, and the S6/S7 are likewise the same content-wise. The C7/7.5 RS7 was the highest spec of the platform in North America only by virtue of Audi not offering RS6 for sale here. Audi correctly assumed that they could cash in on American disdain for sedans and wagons by getting people to pay $~10k more for a car that looks a bit less like a sedan, but is otherwise identical ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No offense to *7 preferring folks, and without getting into nooks and crannies semantics- they aren't the flagship of the platform, just sister cars to the *6.

For what it's worth, Audi of America reports selling roughly three times as many "6" version as "7" version.

I believe it all changed in MY 2013/2014 the A7 rear bench became standard in NA because so many customers bitched about the lack of a third belt in the rear.

4 seats can be funky. Have had 3 people get in the back of the RS7 even when I told them there is not a middle seat. They were drunk so it was fine. Having 4 in my A6 can be weird too but I don’t typically ever need more than that, sucks for airport pick runs!
