2011 Audi A5 2.0t Do I need an engine or not?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am at a lost for words, this is my first experience with anything like this before, I was told that the car is leaking oil from the block and they believe the previous owner ran the car without oil, I want to know if anyone has experience with this kind of issue, and what steps I should take to find out if I need an engine or if this can be fixed somehow, the car cranks but will not start, I will attach all videos from my friend I had look over the car, any and all responses are appreciated

It would seem to be the case; that last video with a hole in the block (I assume it's the block, the videos provide no context to what we're looking at or from what angle) is not something you can just fix up.

Do you think there is a way to replace the block by chance? Or is it smarter to just replace engine?

Yes, the Block is shot with that hole. And it's just not the hole, it's what caused it on the inside that is a big factor. A new engine from Audi is a fortune. A good used engine is probably the best bet. Depends on what your or your friends capabilities are. You might find someone on here (A4,A5, Q5) forums, same motors) or on Craigslist or Ebay. It would be nice to find it in a running wrecked car so you can see/hear it run and maybe check codes and run a compression check. I think 2009-2012 are a direct swap. There are also swaps out there to the B8.5 '13-'16 motors but they need some parts swapped from the old motor to work, including the intake manifold & injectors I believe. There are forums for this swap. It can be sad, if you can't do the work yourself or someone to do it cheaply the car may be a loss or part out.

Okay thanks for the insight, might be a dumb question but, does it have to be from an A5, or can I source an engine from A4, Q5 (2009-2012) and are there anythings I should look out for when swapping the engines, I will have my mechanic do it so I want to make sure I can keep him honest if need be (he is a good mechanic but very busy and sometimes half assess jobs due to high volume of customers) I will go checkout the other threads as well

Most look for a CAED or CPMB engine from the MY14+ years to mitigate the chance of getting an engine that's going to develop the oil consumption issue or failing turbo issue. Obviously, if it has the timing blew up issue, it wouldn't be working. But so there's a lot on these engines that can go expensively wrong, and every time you have to start over with a new used engine, you reset the gamble on each of those components all over again. There's simply no way you'll be able to validate if it burns oil or not. Just the luck of the draw, unless they have validation they already did the rings/pistons rework.

Try contacting Naptown Tuner. He's a YouTube guy who used to work as an Audi technician specializing in your engine. He often rebuilds these engines and sells them. He'll even do the installation for you. It's worth a shot.

You can try contacting recommended shops in your area. https://www.google.com/search?q=audi...bih=1043&dpr=1

Go over to the regional form and look for any more recommended shops/mechanics.

I have an Engine block with new pistons and rings for $1800 you would have to use your crankshaft though.

If you want to find a cheap engine try the salvage auction. Unfortunately there are only a few A5's in VA currently after doing a quick search for an A5, but 1 is up for sale in 6 days and has 126k on it. The entire car would sale for around $1-2k if that so you could just use the engine and sale the rest of the car. There is another 2016 A5 convertible with 29k miles and no sale date posted yet, but obviously that car would sale for a more. I figure it would go for about $8-9k since it's newer, low miles, and a convertible and looks to be a quick and easy fix.

I had the car sitting for about three years and there is a bit of rust underneath, could rust have caused the hole in the block by chance?

Is it actually possible to just swap the block, I’ve heard different opinions

Be careful with copart a lot of guys buy cars with bad engines and resale on copart since copart allows anyone to sale. I usually only by from IAAI that doesn't have that problem. It's ironic, because I know guys who buy on IAAI cheap and just flip it directly to copart and they make pretty good money.

Do I need a broker to bid on IAAI?

More than likely. Most of the same brokers you've used with copart will also work with IAAI...

Buy a new Engine ! I have own my Audi A5 for a few years now and put around 200,000 miles on the motor. I decided it was best to buy a Used motor (30,000Miles) , transmission and turbo. Best decision ever !

A lot cheaper than buying a new car. You can find the Motor at certain Volkswagen repair shops. Have one near my town. Everything came out after installed around $6,500

You do not need a Broker to sign up for IAAI auctions. There is a mermbership fee and try if possible to only purchase close to where you are at for shipping costs and hopefully that way you can go inspect it. Always look for one that is Run & Drive so you can go here it startup and see the overall condition.
Looking for a RS5 motor I made the mistake and purchased an Ebay motor. It was a couple of months until I got it in the car. There had been moisture damage internally due to the engine sitting at the wrecking yard for a too long under poor storage conditions. Now I had to pull a motor which only had 26k miles but was basically toast, scored Rod journal bearings. I recently purchased a Run & Drive 27k RS5. Had it inspected from a friend, it was in Ohio and I'm in WA state. Cooling system was off so could only run it for a couple of minutes at the most. I had it shipped to a yard close by but was able to drive it right onto my trailer. Prior to installing (within the next month). I did an oil change and sent a sample of the old oil to Blackstone (Analaysis came back very good, thankfully).
IAAI is much more reputable than Copart. Copart yards vary a lot from place to place. Some will bolt on a few parts on the car to hide damage so you think the car is in better shape than others. They may list a car as Run & Drive but they don't guarantee it when you get there. They've had a whole lot of lawyers write up there policies and Terms & Conditions, a lot of Fine print, they're basically not responsible to tell the truth whatsoever.
