    My 2012 Q5 2.0T Complete Engine Rebuild

    Hi guys,

Haven't had an Audi in a while but I recently picked up this 2012 Q5 that had a knocking engine. PO was a major pig and let it run low on oil. 3-4 years ago this car had a full piston job at Audi, PO bought it soon after that where it decayed AGAIN. I got the car for cheap so I decided to rebuild the engine.

    Before buying:

    Camshaft damage:

    Head damage:

After taking block apart, scored cylinder wall, block was scrap:

Making the boring bar setup to repair the head/cover:

    Parts came in:

    Preheating & welding:

After boring out the welds, then a lot of hand filing ,etc. Not perfect, but will do the job just fine:

AM pistons ultrasonically cleaned, with new rings:

Junkyard block got all new bearings for mains and rods:

    Head rebuilt/cleaned up:

    Timing done:

    Going back in:

    First start:

    Running pretty good so far!

As maybe you noticed, the black Q5 also in the background...also got for very cheap, needed timing chains done to it.

What did this rebuild run you in terms of budget?

It was around $1300 for parts but then another $600 for the junkyard block. Total with the head work tooling probably $2000 all in.

    Those are Canadian prices.

Obviously not taking into account any of the time which was a month on and off
