i was in the market for the rs3... looks like thats not going to happen for MY22. so my plan was to get a golf r and drive it for a year or so. my uncle (think hes 70 years old) tells me hes going to get a jeep rubicon. well he has a 19 rs3 with less then 6k miles. he said he would sell me his rs3.. btw i traded the m3 for my current car...4runner trd pro.

We have a 2015 Golf R DSG and a 2019 Audi RS 3 DSG. The Golf R is a great automobile but it is no match for our 2019 Audi RS 3, now at 32,709 today of which now consists of 23,550 miles of fast country back road runs, conducted 10am-2pm week days only!

I am retired and am 82 years old, having started drag racing in 1958 and moving to road racing in 1983 with our then new BMW M5. The Audi RS 3 is a truly great automobile and keeps putting big grins on this old face, as we make fast country back road runs weekly, weather permitting.

i'm a huge golf r fan, i drove an mk6 for 8 years. i would not buy the new one. lots of complaints about the new golf r infortainment center. almost no physical buttons.

    19 RS3 all day long.

If he'll sell you the rs3 for a good price, I think it's a no brainer that you go for it. If he wants $65000 like the other sellers right now, then maybe reconsider it...

i told him the that he could just take it to carmax and get 55-60 all day or even around that in a trade in esp with the tax credits.. he said 40, but thats just too lopsided. if i do go with the rs3 ill just match whatever carmax or the jeep dealership gives him. ive always wanted a hatch/wagon thats why im considering the golf R. right now i would say its 50/50. off topic, but 5 years ago he sold his 2008 civic si (low miles) to my friend for dirt cheap, 4500.. SMH dude then resells its for like 7800 the following week. lets just say hes not my friend anymore.

if practicality is that important to you, the golf has a big advantage there. i loved mine so much. with a stage 2+ tune my mk6 was very quick. put the seats down and you have the cargo space of a small suv. need to bring home a large flat screen? no problem. bags of mulch from home depot? easy. haul some recycling to the dump? no sweat. it was an amazing combo of fun and convenient.

i tried to daily my RS3 as my main car for a while and it got a bit frustrating. sure it's more practical than something like a ferrari but it has some drawbacks. the trunk is really small and the opening even with the seats down isn't very big either, particularly height wise. you can always put stuff in the back seats but the back doors are pretty dang small too so not a whole lot fits through the opening. i ended up picking up a Q5 just because i needed something that was more practical.

having said all that, character wise, my RS3 is better in just about every other aspect. the engine and exhaust sound glorious. simple tune will get the crackles back on that 19 model.

Signde, you had the best R vw made, I had a 7.5 and it was so so at best, the decision between a 2019 RS3 that was owned by a family member or a new mk8 R, it’s the RS3 all day everyday and twice on Sunday.

i would go for a 7.5 R over the new one. sure the new torque vectoring diff is awesome and the new R seems underrated from the factory so very quick but reviews of that interior make me cringe. i'd highly encourage OP to watch the smoking tire's golf r review and doug demuro's review of the GTI which has the same infotainment. it makes me sad, i was really excited for the new mk8 R and was toying with the idea of picking up one as daily for a bit but it's completely off the table for me now.

RS3 and it’s not even close. In every way possible.

If your uncle is going to sell it to you for 40, take it and say thank you. Tomorrow.

If you don’t take it, I’ll take it for 50.

Agree with the above.... If he's family and wants to help you out by giving you a deal, accept it and say "thank you", pay it back and forward by knowing his actual age and spending time with him. Nothing against the R' but there are too many special things about the RS3 to pass this opportunity up.

    I would go RS3, it's way more special/unique.

IMO the practicality of small car with a hatch (like the Golf R) is overrated.

I've had two Golf R's a 17 and 18. It's a fun car to drive but it's no comparison to an RS3. A totally different class.

Your asking this question in an RS3 forum, keep that in mind. With that being said RS3 all day

I have a '18 Golf R, and would go with the RS3 pretty easily. Personally, I still can't seem to justify trading in for a 8V RS3 though.
The engine and beefier drivetrain are the only things I like about the RS3...so the whole DAZA swap is more enticing.

To add...at least here in Canada, for not much more you can get a RS5 Sportback or Coupe...
but I am still floating the idea of simply my third B9.5 S4 or a S5 Sportback and modding it for less money then what the RS3's are going for. Might not get massive amounts of power, but will be more then happy with it

    new golf r or 19 rs3?

My 2 cents, I’ve had a few GTI’s and a 2019 R. Always enjoyed the GTI’s, loved stepping up to the R, was my affordable dream car. For me it hit all the right items. r got totaled about a year later. with Covid getting into full swing, Audi said there’s an RS3 on the boat and unclaimed. With no R’s coming out for over a year I went with the Audi, I drive it all year round up here off the lake in NY and I absolutely love it. The sound puts a grin on my face every time I step into it. The get up and go compares to nothing I’ve ever owned before and as I look ahead I don’t know what I would replace it with. I miss the hatch, but our family of 3 have taken plenty of trips and other than height I feel I can haul a bit more as the trunk depth is better than the hatch.

RS3 hands down. I’ve had a mk6 and mk7.5 R as well as multiple gtis before I got my 19 RS3 at the end of 19. The 5 cylinder is just something special. I did a tune to get some of the exhaust character that was coded out in 19 plus the extra power. With the shift to ev looking inevitable, I will be holding onto this car indefinitely. If you can, get an 8v rs3 now, it’s a classic in my opinion.

Had a 2016 mk7r (stage 2 ) sold it for a 2018 rs3 had it 4 year mod it (hybrid turbo etc) sold it due to COVID crazy prize and I bought a 2022 S3 at msrp, the best of both worlds I think.

Markup on mk8r / crazy price on RS3 8v will fall when the supply chain get back to normal. The new RS3 / mk8r will be available in every dealership and you will be hit by depreciation like a mf.

If you don't need to buy a new car stay put for a couple of months.

The RS3 8v interior is ok but it's dated compared to a mk8 or the 8y generation

Another 2022 S3 owner here, can say I'm very happy with my choice ~2300 miles later. Only mods so far are 034 spacers/rear swaybar/end links and it's the most fun daily I've ever had. The only thing I'd replace it with right now is a 8Y RS3 at MSRP, and we all know that ain't happening.
