    Changing a Battery on 2019 RS5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
From what I understand, if I change my battery I'm going to need a VCP? and program the car to the new battery ?
OR let me rephrase...ask not tell.
Whats needed to change the battery in this car ?
What are some aftermarket battery's to go with if I'm not buying one from the dealer? (and maybe ones that "do not EVER use" ?)
If I were to put in the exact same OEM battery would I still need to do anything?

In my experience, the cost of an OEM battery vs. aftermarket was negligible, even including the dealer coding for the OE battery. I would ring the dealer first if you're needing to change one out and save the headache.

And yes, you're going to need to code the new battery (OEM or not) so the car can better manage power levels and maintain good battery life. At that point, dealer option seems like the no-brainer to me.

Its not about the cost. In fact my battery should be no where near needing replacement. I like to have all my info, for when time comes. Everytime my battery has gone out, its been sudden and very dead. Its been very convenient to pop in somewhere and pop in the battery and be done (ie the one time it was thanksgiving morning). Now a simple battery change has become an immobilizing event that needs planning like a water pump or something, and yet its just a battery.
thats why I want to know my options now, for instance if it goes dead...dont even think about putting in a battery from a parts store? or you can do it, but get it programmed soon as you can? Only use xyz type battery? or any one will work as long as you get it programmed within a week ?
Otherwise, if it goes out, only armed with what I know now, I'd have to call a tow truck.

I think each battery has a BEM code that you need to input into the battery management system.

I think you are correct, but how to "input".....via this "VCP" ?

If you buy an OBD Eleven (OBD11), sync it to your phone Bluetooth, it can be stored in the car and used whenever necessary.

    OBDeleven Next Gen Pro

The OBD11 can be used to check battery status or recode the battery. I have only checked battery status with the VCDS, but the OBD11 can do it also. I have used both OBD11 and VCDS for recoding my Audi.

Forum OBDeleven, Adjust values by battery change

    "Adjust values by battery change
    * Applicable to all models *
If you change the battery, this mod will be very useful. Adjust the values to the ones on the battery sticker and accept the changes.
    1 - Module 19 - Diagnostic interface for data bus - Code (20103)
    2 - Adaptation
3 - Battery voltage - (Change value to the desired one) Check
the correct values on the battery sticker. AH Manufacturer, Serial No. and if it is Dry or Wet. "

The code on the battery adaption needs to be change, so the battery management knows it is a new battery.

    You don't need VCP.

    VCDS or ODBII will work.

Best is to change battery type (if different). At least change the battery serial # by one digit. That's enough to get the car to 'recognize' a new battery and adjust charging accordingly.

It looks like the batteries have gone up in price. Autozone is now $209. The Audi dealer price for a new battery purchased in the parts department may not be much more than the aftermarket price (especially if you have one of the 10% off Audi dealer parts coupons).

I bought and Ancel VD700 scanner a while back, it will program in the new battery among other things. Just used it today to release the Electronic parking brake for rotor/pad replacement. Can usually find it new on ebay for around $70. Amazon it is around double that. I bought from the former. Super simple to use, instructions come up on the screen. Never even looked at the manual.
