No maps for a do it yourself install, must see the dealer and pay for it.

You will not be able to update your maps independently based on your model year. Audi has a predetermined checksum in the MMI that will only allow up to 5 "free" updates (independent DIY/OTA updates) in 6 month intervals. Your only option is to visit the dealer and pay their update fee which will get you the latest map version (currently 2022).

FWIW, I have a MY2019 and was able to acquire the 2022 map update from another Audi forum. I will try to see if it works for me, but I think I am stuck with the 2021 update due to the checksum.

Question for you Daaavid: My car will be two years old in about a month, I've done 3 map updates in the past and have 2 remaining, but there are no map updates for DIY/OTA, did Audi just drop the ball on the updates? Any idea why Audi will not supply the map updates, this not only affects me but a lot of members on AudiWorld too. If promised something, Audi should deliver.

Wonder if these types of updates are covered for as long as the car’s still under warranty (certified). It’d make sense, right?! I mean hey, it isn’t like you’re needing to replace brakes/rotors, wipers, tires and other parts that obviously need to be covered out of pocket.

That's a great question and one of the reasons why I resorted to the forums to figure out where the updates were. Basically, you're able to update OTA through the MMI if your checksums are still valid but updating OTA only allows you to download 3 regions and that's it; you're unable to update the entirety of the navigation database OTA so certain regions would be outdated. The only way to download the navigation database in its entirety is to download it onto a flash drive/SD card and update through the MMI (like how the dealer does it). One was able to do this on their myAudi platform in North America, but Audi removed this feature in the middle of the pandemic for unknown reasons. You are now limited to OTA updates (partial downloads if the server works) or if someone has/had access to the full database to share.

However, going to your mention of having "2 remaining." I wanted to clarify that it follows your production build date and whatever navigation database was installed from the port. Take for example, I believe my navigation database was 2019 when I purchased my MY2019 but I can't remember exactly. So, if I have a map database of 2019, I am allotted 5 additional updates from the port installed database. Based on Audi's NAR releases, that puts me at 2022 being my 4th allotted free update if I am not forgetting a mid-year update.
    • 2018-2019
    • 2019 (from port)
    • 2020
    • 2020-2021
    • 2021 (DIY installed)
    • 2022 (my 4th update if 2019 was my originally installed database)

I'll confirm if it works for me as I haven't had the chance to install the 2022 update yet. If I can't, this means my car came from port with 2018-2019 maps so it leads me to the following answer: I've reached the limit for the 5 free updates and the shared database is missing a half-year update so the checksums don't match.

This has been debated time and time again on the internet from all makes and models. It doesn't quality as a warranty claim, unfortunately. My hypothesis is I believe the navigation maps are acquired via a license with whoever the map distributor is and Audi has to pay to acquire the license and labor to install. This cost is passed down to the consumer.

Thanks for the detailed reply Daaavid. I'm exactly where you are and have the same model year and have done the same map updates. I'll see if I can get the 2022 maps to update OTA. Plus the 3 region (States) area is an insult, I wonder sometimes if Audi ever thought that people might take the car on a vacation and travel more than 3 States away from home, how silly is this? I always have CarPlay and a variety of maps to use, they are probably better anyway. Good luck with the 2022 update.

I actually just tried to do the 2022 map update and although I am not surprised, it said there was no valid update on the USB source. This means that 2021 is the last database my car will allow independently, and that also means 2018/2019 was the installed database when I purchased my vehicle (production date November 2018). So if we follow the trendlines, the available databases I am able to install independently are: 2019, 2019/2020, 2020, 2020/2021, 2021.

During this update process, I also saw that an online update was possible, so I selected that and to my surprise, it queried 2020/2021 as available to download. Pointless to me since 2021 is newer than the '2020/2021' database, but surprising that it didn't query 2021. Maybe it already recognizes that I have the newest one? Or Audi didn't change the OTA database? Who knows.

Anyways, check your PM. I am providing you some material.

The 2022 was a no-go for me too, same response you got: no valid update. At this point I have given up with the Audi Maps, I will just use something that works on my iPhone like: IMG_9958.jpg

I have more than enough maps to find anything on the planet... ten times over and then some...LOL. Thanks for the help Daaavid.

What map update are you looking for, and do you have any of the 5 Audi OTA updates in 2.5 years left? There is another way to do it via SD card, but like Daaavid said, you get 3 states, it's a joke, save time and use something else.

Guys, The MAP update issue is a major rabbit hole, however you can update your MMI so that you can get "Unlimited Map Updates" for your vehicle. The process to do this without going to Audi is quiet involved, includes multiple steps including firmware changes to your MMI. If you aren't comfortable messing around with your vehicle's MMI system I would recommend that you go ahead and spend the "THE BIG $$ DOLLARS" with Audi Service and have them do it. If you don't do this process correctly you can turn your car into a "BRICK"! If you are comfortable with your vehicles MMI electronics it is very possible to update your Audi Maps to the latest in greatest forever! Cheers!
