    PPF on Piano Black Trim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am meeting with my paint protection guy tomorrow to protect the Piano Black interior trim. We have two options; 1. apply PPF or 2. apply ceramic coating. I am leaning more towards PPF, though he expressed concerns around the water being near electronics (screen and climate control panel) they use when applying the film. I am curious if the PPF that folks used was different, as I have seen the pre-cut from Xpel. Appreciate any insights here before I get the work done.

I have the precut stuff xpel. It’s not 100% perfect but what precut kit is. I’d give it a solid 95 though. That being said their precut kit I went with is the rx which is matte and anti microbial. It’s fantastic against fingerprints on the black and the screens, however it’s not self healing and I have lightly scratched mine when a microfiber had something on it.

Does the Xpel have adhesive on it already or installed like typical PPF (such on the outside of the car)?

I’m having the same done this week - Xpel stealth Rx on all interior polished surfaces and screens. I can take a few photos on Friday if that would help.

I have clear PPF (by STEK) on all the interior piano black trim and dash. Everything except the two touch screens are covered. No issues with this at all. The installation went fine. The first time a bit of trapped debris was seen on the center console piece so I had it replaced and second time was fine as well.
This option has the benefit of keeping the factory look (shiny piano black) as well as add self healing properties. You can wipe with microfiber all the time and not worry about the scratches. It actually scratches all the time, but in a day or so, it heals and it's back to normal.
I don't think adding a ceramic coating would do much honestly. Ceramic coating doesn't significantly increase scratch resistance. At least, no where near PPF.

Can I ask a favor? Would you share the part number for the precut kit? I seem to be struggling to find it on their site.

    Thanks

I called them and had them remove the door pieces and the top dash trim since the carbon twill won't be covered. That knocks the price down a bit.

My screen shot above has the exact part number I ordered from xpel. It’s custom because I left out the parts I didn’t want but you can call them and get the kit you need for you.

Folks, a couple questions on this topic. For the piano black trim, is there potential to just lightly polish it as needed (with a specified plastic polish) to manage inevitable surfaces scratches? PPF is a logical option, but it will deteriorate over time and cannot be polished. I had the euro lid installed so even more surface area to consider.

On the screens, the finger prints drive me nuts. If PPF applied, must it be a slight matte to hide the prints? Gloss I would assume would not?

    Thanks in advance!

Whe I spoke to xpel to order mine he was clear that the normal clear wouldn’t hide the finger prints. Both the stealth and the anti microbial would with very little clarity loss. I went with the anti microbial and can say the screens and the piano black are great. You mention deteriorating over time, they have ten year warranties and I’ve had their product on my cars for ages and have only replaced one panel and that was due to an impact and covered under warranty. That being said I would bet it lasts a long time in the car. Now I have said this before I went with the anti microbial and already have a few small scratches from debris on the microfiber I used, totally my fault. If I did it again I would go the straight stealth as it has the self healing vs the anti microbial which does not, but I bought two sets of the anti microbial so I’ll just replace that panel if the scratch bugs me.

How does the stealth compare with anti microbial in terms of touch/slide resistants? I’d like to have some resistance on the screen. I bought a PowerSupport matte screen protector film to test and really liked how it felt: just enough resistance to prevent fingers sliding around which makes much easier to control during driving.

The reason I haven’t install that film permanently is that they must be cut precisely to the screens’ shapes (they are not rectangular) and they go on dry so will be very difficult to avoid dust trapped under the film.

The anti microbial feels good can’t compare it on screens but the stealth on my car feels good as well :)

Did you use stealth on the screens and the piano black panels? I'd like to do this. What kit did you buy/ do you recommend I buy?

My posts above have the RX kit part number I ordered. You can call them and custom make like I did as I didn’t want all the parts that came with their normal kit.

Will they precut the stealth film like their RX kit or does the installer have to cut the stealth to fit?

If you contact Xpel, they will ship you the precut films. An installer with the right equipment can also cut them on-site.
