    AN fittings for power steering

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As we know, full replacement of all VAG steering hoses and lines is exorbitantly expensive; around 1500$. I am doing a full system replacement have pretty much decided to run 6AN braided stainless for most of the lines with fittings to match

Looking for any input, suggestions, experience with AN. I know that changing from stock is full of hidden pit falls. Threading the hard lines in at the rack stands out as one of the more difficult challenges, and using aftermarket fittings and hoses will not make that easier. Also what is the pig tail on the pressure line for? Is it for fluid dynamics? Or to give some flex on install? Vibration damping?

Im going with a mishimoto cooler instead of the 300$ Audi cooling pipe, and it comes with 6an fittings. It will be braided stainless from there to the reservoir, where it will just be clamped as per original

From reso to pump, I’ll just go with a quality rubber hose and original style clamps on either end

For the pressure line there are options: Sunsong brand intermediate pipe and pump-end hard line. They appear to be very reputable and it only costs 70$. The line is a super PIA to get in and out though. I would be cleaning and reusing the hard line at the rack end
Option two is to go full AN. An AN banjo and 45 hose end at the pump gets the hose going the right direction and should be a breeze to route compared to the original. A 90 hose end with a 45 coupler and an AN banjo will get the right bend at the rack and mimic the original hard line there.
Another option here is to reuse the original banjo hard lines. The pump end hard line would need an AN bung welded on, but the rack end would just use an inverted flare to AN adapter

Same deal with return line. Full AN or hybrid with stainless AN bung welded on old hard line at rack

Wy? I read the post of the powersteering trouble but i would re use the hoses if they are all good, just clean them out with brake cleaner and air.

The high pressure line (8) is most expensive and 3 parts or something like that.

I believe the reason my fluid is black is because the hose rubber is beginning to break down. The only parts I am comfortable reusing are the hard lines

Also the return line is wet in a few places like it may start leaking soon

I am eliminating any possibility of contamination or rupture

I can't help with the AN fitting side of things as I have never done it. But in your situation I agree replacing the hoses is the best course of action. I had my High pressure line fail, not fun and actually not very safe.

Rockauto has SUNSONG branded line for $71 CAD (#8 hose Rol-co posted). I only mention this because it is the hose I am currently using on my car. I reused hard pipe #9 but I replaced #7 due to rust at the connection to #8.
The low pressure return line (#10) I replaced with OEM as I couldn't find 3rd party at the time and 130 CAD wasn't the end of the world.

Usually pigtails are to accommodate from expansion and contraction due to temperature shift. Each threaded connection will be the weakest point in the line, barring that the new line itself is rated for the pressure/temp/chemical resistance of the PS. I’m interested to hear what you end up using to connect to the rack as the banjo setup is unique. Is there a banjo to AN adapter you’re using?

Are you using the right oil? I'm using the kroon oil 3013, it is a green color. Don't take an atf.

That return line no 10 i have it leaking now at my car too, completely wet and dripping oil at the street, ordered him today at the dealer and cost €67,- so that one (with banjo) is not all that expensive.

The other high pressure one has the banjo separately from the hose numbers 7-8-9, you only need 8.
Here you can see that, pretty complex part.

I’m thinking about that sunsong line. Fit pretty good? Is it easier to get in than get out? I can’t imagine it is

Defo doing AN for the return. Dunno if I will weld on the old hard banjo end or just go full AN. New cooler with AN, and I hate the clamped look under the grill

I’ve got AN to banjo with 45s and a 90 on the hose ends, but I could just reuse the the original ends with flare to AN or weld on bungs

Fitment was fine but getting it out was easier for sure.

Since I couldn't separate #8 and #7, I used a small pipe cutter to get rid of the coil so I could remove it in two pieces. I installed the new line in reveres but I didn't connect #8 and #7 until they were both back in the car. I did the job sitting in my driveway with some knock off wrench.

I took my lines to an automotive AC repair shop that had the capability to repair high-pressure rubber lines, like for hydraulics and such. They replaced the rubber sections for me at $50 each. Took about two days. That horrible little J-bend for the return line that connects to the pump was replaced with just rubber, a spring wrapped around it to keep it open, and DEI heat wrap. Reinstallation was much much easier that way.

I may cut and reuse that j bend banjo with a weld on bung, or I may use AN banjo with a 45 bend hose end
