    Power steering fluid

Good morning. I was reading a thread here about power steering fluid but I have lost it and can’t find it again. I am struggling with the search function here…. Anyway, if the power steering reservoir says “Use only mineral hydraulic fluid” does that mean don’t use S11, use 7.1 instead?

I should add, I have a 2008 A4 2.9t Quattro. Based on what I read before I hit the wrong button and made it go away, I was expecting to have to buy some expensive synthetic pentosin oil but on the reservoir it says use mineral hydraulic oil. Those are two different things, right?

Pentosin CHF 11s is what most use. Genuine Audi fluid is actually cheaper though, and the Pentosin is a synthetic. Chf202 is the older stuff, but pretty sure its sufficient.

It is my understanding that cf11s and cf202 are synthetic whereas my reservoir says to use mineral hydraulic oil. That means it’s not synthetic so whatever is left in there would be mixing with the new stuff. The notions about mixing are, well, mixed so I went with the pentosin stuff that is not synthetic. Thanks though, I appreciate the quick replies.

Buy OEM. A friend used synthetic when it clearly said use mineral oil on the cap and it wrecked seals.

I had end seals go on 2 different rebuilt racks. One I used chf11s, the other I used genuine fluid. Thing is, there is NO WAY to know thats why his seals went bad. Sometimes they just go..

I've been using CH11s for over 12 years now in all my VAG cars, zero issues, the cap says mineral but nothing sold has been a base mineral oil since the 90s, Even dealer stuff is a synthetic hydraulic fluid.

its the other way around. Chf202 is new and fully compatible and mixable with audi fluid.

I am running 202 and flushed power steering about 2-3 times in 3 years to get all the old fluild out. Nothing abnormal seen in extracted fluid.

    This is their description.

"The Pentosin CHF 2.2 is an all purpose high performance synthetic oil based power steering fluid formulated for central hydraulic systems such s power steering, rear axle steering, level control, hydro-pneumatic suspension, and shock absorbers. Compatible with:
    Audi (2006 - 2010)
    Porsche Cayenne (2005 - 2010)
    Saab (2006 - 2010)
    Volkswagen (2006 - 2010)
    Volvo (2002 - 2010)

NOTE: If vehicle specifications state CHF 7.1, CHF 11S and CHF 202 can be substituted in place of, but not mixed with, CHF 7.1, CHF 11S and CHF 202 are fully compatible and mixable.

I bought this 11 years ago for $23 and topped it off just once. Still good I guess. Not sure if these kinds of stuff actually expires. Fluid still has a nice deep green tint.

Yes, I mixed them up. Chf11s is fully synthetic, chf202 is semi-synthtic. But both are cross compatable.,ya can even use either in older cars that use dex 3 ATF, if you completely flush the system. Don't wanna mix it.
